SYDNEY — Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday that Andrew McDonald has been awarded a contract extension, ensuring his role as the head coach of the national team through to the end of 2027. This decision reflects McDonald’s successful tenure since taking over from Justin Langer in early 2022.
Under McDonald's leadership, Australia has achieved significant milestones, including winning the T20 World Cup for the first time and securing their sixth 50-over World Cup title. In Test cricket, the team retained the Ashes after a hard-fought series in England in 2023, and currently, they sit atop the world rankings.
McDonald expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort of his team, highlighting the dedication of the players, coaching staff, and support personnel. "I am very fortunate to have an exceptional group of leaders, players, coaches, and staff who are fully invested in the ongoing well-being, success, and development of this group," he said in a news release. He emphasized the importance of creating a culture of unity, trust, and inclusivity within the team.
As McDonald prepares his squad for an upcoming series of five Tests against India, his extension also sets the stage for future challenges, including the home Ashes series in the 2025-26 season and a significant year in 2027, which includes a Test tour of India, defending the World Cup title in Southern Africa, and hosting the 150th anniversary Test against England in Melbourne.
Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia's Executive General Manager of national teams, praised McDonald’s coaching abilities, stating, "Andrew is an outstanding coach, and we are thrilled that he has extended his commitment to the Australian men's team. He has created a performance environment that resonates strongly with the playing group and has produced some outstanding results."
With this extension, McDonald aims to build on his successes and further strengthen Australia’s position in international cricket as they look forward to upcoming challenges.
