Australia's Strategic Gamble Pays Off-Smith Looks Back at Fixture Uncertainty and Preparation in Dubai
Steve Smith looks back at Australia's strategic risk, fixture uncertainty, and rigorous preparation in Dubai that paid off in the Champions Trophy 2025.

Cricket is a sport of uncertainties, not only what transpires on the field but also away from it. The Australian cricket team were confronted with one such uncertainty when they arrived in Dubai for the Champions Trophy without knowing if their travel would be to Lahore for the second semi-final or would have them based in the UAE. With a cloud of uncertainty hanging over their schedule, the team made the most of the situation, making a logistical mess into a chance to hone their skills and unwind before the nerve-wracking matchup.
A Well-Planned Guess that Paid Off for Australia
When they arrived in Dubai, the Australians were put in a strange situation, having to wait for the outcome of other matches to decide where they would go next. In contrast to South Africa, which finally returned to Lahore, the Australian team took a strategic move and stayed in Dubai. Commenting on the choice, team captain Steven Smith said, "We guessed right in the end."
If the team had waited until the final results to travel, they would have been forced to take a last-minute flight and dive headfirst into a very important semi-final match without proper training or acclimatization. Instead, by remaining in Dubai, the team made the most of its practice sessions at the ICC Academy. Though they were not lucky enough to train on the Dubai Stadium itself—its crowded calendar aside—they used the nearby centers as a priceless chance to rehearse under equivalent circumstances.
Smith added the value of this practice: "If we had delayed and then traveled out today, we would not have had any true time to practice and experience a sense of conditions.". It's always good to acclimatize to the pitch and conditions, and being here enabled us to do just that. The other option would have been flying back to Lahore on the same flight as New Zealand, which would not have been great for our preparation.
A Much-Needed Breather for the Team
Aside from the training, the extra time in Dubai provided the Australians with a welcome respite from the strict security protocols that they had to adhere to in Pakistan. Although Pakistan has taken every precaution to provide for player safety, the security protocols tend to be limiting for the visiting teams, keeping them cooped up in their hotels and restricting their movement.
"We had a little reset here in Dubai," Smith said. Pakistan's security is quite tight there, so naturally we've had to stay in a pretty hard bubble. But here the players were allowed a couple of days off, so some of the guys fit in a round of golf and others used the opportunity to get out into the city and unwind a bit. It's been good to have that mental respite before returning to the grind.
The chance to get out of a very controlled bubble and have some downtime is frequently an underappreciated part of professional athletics. Freshness of mind is so important in high-stakes tournaments, and Australia's decision to remain in Dubai seems to have given them that mix of rest and training.
Meeting the Challenge-Australia Prepared to Counter Spin Threat
One of the main issues for the Australian side coming into the semi-final is their capacity to respond to spin bowling, especially against India, a side famous for possessing a deadly spin attack. Nevertheless, Smith is optimistic that his team is ready for the challenge.
“We know what to expect, and we’ve done our homework,” he stated. “The conditions here have given us a good sense of what we’ll be up against. The pitches are slow, and there’s some turn, but we’re up for it. The guys have worked hard in the nets, facing quality spin and preparing for different scenarios.”
Australia’s batting lineup has often faced scrutiny when it comes to tackling spin, but with extensive preparations and a few strategic adjustments, the team hopes to neutralize India’s advantage. “Adaptability will be key,” Smith added. “It’s about playing smart, rotating the strike, and putting pressure back on the bowlers. We’re confident in our approach.”
A Calculated Approach to Success
Australia's knack for transforming an uncertain travel circumstance into a clever preparation plan is a testament to their experience and flexibility. Opting to remain in Dubai was not only preventing a hectic last-minute scramble for the team, but also valuable practice time, a psychological rejuvenation, and a more positive grasp of playing conditions.
As they prepare for the semi-final, the team is not just physically prepared but also mentally refreshed. Under Smith's leadership, with a well-drilled team, Australia is ready to face whatever obstacles lie ahead of them, reaffirming the fact that in cricket, astute decisions away from the field are as valuable as performances on it.
