Babar Azam’s Exclusion Sparks Outrage-Father Slams PCB & Critics Over T20I Snub
Babar Azam's omission from the T20I team creates an uproar as his father lashes out at the PCB and critics for the contentious snub.

The exclusion of Pakistan’s star batter, Babar Azam, from the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand has stirred a storm of criticism and debate. Following Pakistan’s dismal performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, where the team failed to secure even a single victory in the group stage, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided on a major reshuffle. Consequently, both wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam were dropped from the team, with many reactions coming from fans and experts alike.
The Champions Trophy Fallout-A Turning Point
Pakistan's early exit in the Champions Trophy 2025 was a disaster. The team, which could not get its act together, was criticized for its poor performances. Among the star players who came under fire were Babar Azam, who, being a world-class batter, could not deliver as expected. Fans and retired cricketers were disappointed and some went to the extent of questioning his leadership prowess and ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
One of the strongest criticisms came from ex-pacer Shoaib Akhtar, who boldly referred to Babar as a "fraud," heightening the controversy surrounding his performances. But the choice to leave out Babar altogether from the New Zealand T20I series caused raised eyebrows, with most perceiving that the action was too extreme for a player of his caliber.
Babar Azam's Father Defends His Son
During the criticism, Babar's father, Azam Siddique, stood firm against both the PCB and critics and expressed his anger at the treatment of his son. In a passionate statement, he highlighted Babar's accomplishments and supported him to stage a strong comeback.
"Boss is right always. He was selected for the ICC's T20 Team of the Year, he received the cap, and he is being cut loose. Okay, that is alright. He will establish himself in National T20 and PSL. Insha Allah, he will be back stronger. That is the only dignified thing to say."
Azam Siddique also spoke about the former players who have been vocal in their criticism, asking them to be more careful with their words. He cautioned that though they are entitled to their opinions, they should not forget their own past performances.
"Some excellent previous players have to pick their words wisely. If someone answers them, they might not be equipped to cope with it. They are in the past, and that door never opens again."
In addition to this, he also stood by his position as Babar's mentor and harshest critic, dismissing all those who take issue with him for speaking for his son.
"I am his first and last coach, mentor, and father. People who cannot appreciate this should wait. Before passing judgment on Babar, check the PCB's own website and history. A hint is enough for the wise."
Pakistan's Squad Changes & Injury Woes
Pakistan's tour of New Zealand will involve five T20Is and three ODIs, starting from March 16. Yet, the team will lack many of its key players, who will be missing from the action due to injuries.
Injuredynamic opener Saim Ayub continues to remain on the sidelines due to a knee injury, whereas Fakhar Zaman, the one who only rejoined the team, was sidelined after a minor injury on the first game of the Champions Trophy. Missing from Pakistan's top order due to his lack is a substantial setback, especially because he had promised to provide major contributions for the series.
Even though Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were left out, the PCB has selected a team with a mix of experience and young players. Salman Ali Agha will captain the T20 team, with Shadab Khan as his deputy. In ODIs, meanwhile, Muhammad Rizwan has been handed over the captainship.
ODI Squad-
Muhammad Rizwan (Captain), Salman Ali Agha (VC), Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Akif Javed, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Imam-ul-Haq, Khushdil Shah, Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Wasim Jr., Muhammad Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Sufyan Muqeem, Tayyab Tahir.

What's Next for Babar Azam?
Even though he was rested for the New Zealand series, Babar Azam is still among the most skilled batters in contemporary cricket. His record is proof in itself, and his father's assurance proves that he is determined to get back to the national team.
With the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 and domestic T20 tournaments in sight, Babar has enough chances to justify his form and quiet his detractors. If he performs well, a recall to the national team may not be long in coming.
Final Thoughts
The move to drop Babar Azam has also caused huge controversy among cricket followers and experts. While some have argued that he deserves to be dropped after his recent performances, others feel it is an overreaction to a bad tournament. His father's vehement defense of him has also only served to fuel the drama, making it evident that the saga is by no means at an end.
As Pakistan gears up to battle New Zealand, everyone will be focusing on how the team plays in the absence of its former skipper. While that, Babar Azam will also be eagerly watching from the side, hoping to make a robust return and recapture his top position.
