Bangladesh Pinning Hopes on Mahmudullah's Return for Pivotal New Zealand Clash
Bangladesh hopes to bank on Mahmudullah's comeback for their decisive confrontation with New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. His leadership and experience may play a crucial role in bolstering the team's prospects in the decisive match.

In a bid to stay in contention for the semifinals, Bangladesh are looking towards veteran campaigner Mahmudullah and his possible return before the team's defining match against New Zealand. Their do-or-die game in Rawalpindi on February 24 will decide if the team is still in the race for a place in the semis. The comeback of Mahmudullah, who has a reputation of being calm under pressure and someone who can play anchor innings, might be what the team needed to give the much-needed shot in the arm.
Bangladesh Suffers from Lack of Mahmudullah
Mahmudullah injured a calf muscle in a training camp before Bangladesh faced India. Mahmudullah's absence was much felt as Bangladesh were in real trouble early, losing five wickets for merely 35 runs. It was due to the bravery of Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali, who broke a record alliance, that the team could put up a fight total. The brilliant hundred from Hridoy and the half-century by Jaker provided Bangladesh with a chance to fight back, but that was insufficient for them to emerge victorious. India chased down the total in the 48th over and won the match by six wickets.
With this reverse, Bangladesh is placed in a critical situation. With the tournament in its short form, every match holds so much significance, and a defeat against New Zealand would effectively wrap up their tournament. Conversely, the Black Caps are full of confidence following a stellar beginning, having beaten Pakistan by 60 runs in the tournament opener on February 19. Their sweep of the recent tri-series in Pakistan, in which they won all their matches, including two against the hosts, further strengthens their reputation as a force to be reckoned with.
Medical Team Hopeful of Mahmudullah's Return
The Bangladesh management is optimistic that Mahmudullah would be fit in time for the important encounter. Team manager Rabeed Imam said the experienced batter was making consistent progress in his recovery and a decision would be made after the final practice session prior to the match.
We are optimistic about Mahmudullah's availability for the remainder of the tournament. His recovery is going well, but we will know more after our last practice session in Rawalpindi," Imam said.
Scans done subsequent to the injury revealed that there was no calf muscle tear of Mahmudullah, a positive development that signaled his comeback would be sooner rather than later. "Since there is no tear, it completely depends on how comfortable he is. Once he is fully fit, he will be available for playing," Imam said.
Selection Dilemma for Bangladesh
With Mahmudullah's possible comeback, the team management of Bangladesh has a difficult selection to make. The plan was for either Jaker or Hridoy to be dropped in favor of the senior batter. But with their great performances in the previous match, it would be a hard decision to bench either of them. Now, the selectors find themselves in a dilemma—either rework the top order or go for not dropping a senior player like Mushfiqur Rahim.
Hridoy, who suffered cramps during his first ODI century, has recovered since and is fit for selection. His inclusion in the playing XI appears a certainty, considering his match-winning ability. Jaker also made a strong case for himself with a well-built fifty under tremendous pressure. If Mahmudullah is fit, Bangladesh will have to carefully consider their options to find the right balance between experience and form.
Bangladesh's Preparations and Future Plans
The team is now in Pakistan and has had their initial practice session on the 22nd of February. The session was being kept very much under supervision by the coaching staff, especially regarding Mahmudullah's fitness level. The management knows that their batting unit has lacked consistency, and having a veteran middle-order batter can offer the solidity that they badly lack.
Bangladesh's quest in the Champions Trophy is on the line, and their next match against New Zealand will be a turning point. With the Black Caps red-hot and Bangladesh struggling to survive in the tournament, each player's effort will be paramount. The team's perseverance and ability to withstand pressure will seal their fate in the competition.
If Mahmudullah returns successfully, it may prove to be the turning point Bangladesh require to stay in contention for the semifinals. At present, all attention is on his recovery, with the team and fans eagerly waiting for a final call on his availability.
