BCB Forms Committee to Amend Constitution
The BCB has confirmed the resignations of several directors, including A.M. Naimur Rahman Durjoy, Khaled Mahmud, and Md. Enayet Husain Siraj. It has also been reported that the directorships of 11 additional directors have been vacated due to their absence from three or more consecutive meetings.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a significant step toward enhancing its governance by establishing a constitution amendment committee. This decision was reached during the 15th meeting of the BCB Board of Directors held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The move comes in response to a request from the National Sports Council (NSC), which sought clarity on the BCB’s current operational status and urged the formation of a committee to facilitate necessary constitutional reforms.
In a letter sent to the BCB, the NSC emphasized the importance of a comprehensive and inclusive constitution to foster good governance within sports organizations. The letter stated, “An acceptable and inclusive constitution plays a vital role to bring good governance in the sports arena, which has been seen over time.” It highlighted that a well-structured constitution confirms accountability and responsibility within the organization, and underscored the NSC's commitment to creating an ideal environment for the BCB.
The NSC also mentioned that it traditionally does not interfere in the BCB's daily operations but plays a supportive role in promoting positive initiatives. It recommended that the sub-committee include members from the NSC to enhance the effectiveness of the reform process.
Following this directive, the BCB announced the formation of the Constitution Amendment Committee, which will be led by BCB director Nazmul Abedin as the convener. This committee is tasked with evaluating the existing BCB Constitution, identifying potential improvements, and proposing amendments that align with the Board’s strategic goals and the evolving landscape of cricket governance.
Additionally, the NSC has requested the BCB to provide details regarding the status of directors who have been terminated or vacated their positions due to absences from three consecutive meetings, as stipulated by clause 15.2 of the BCB Constitution. The NSC’s inquiry included a request for information on any actions taken to fill these vacant posts, in accordance with clause 13.4.
The affected directors include former BCB president Nazmul Hasan and several others.
In a historical context, the Nazmul-led panel had overseen the BCB for over a decade until Faruque Ahmed recently took over, coinciding with a period of exile for several Board members following the political turmoil that led to the ousting of the Awami League government in August.
In a related announcement, the BCB confirmed that the 11th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 is scheduled to commence on December 30, 2024, with the final match set for February 7, 2025.
