BCCI's Latest Move Ahead of Australia Tour Seen as Indication of Much 'Concern' After New Zealand Hammering
The Indian team needs to win four matches in Australia to avoid relying on other teams' results for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
Following India's heavy loss to New Zealand in the recent Test series, there is increased scrutiny on the team, especially with the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. To address concerns over the batting lineup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to send KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel early to Australia. The duo will play a game for India A against Australia A before the Test series begins.
This move has raised eyebrows, with some seeing it as a sign of concern regarding India's batting form, especially after their disappointing series against New Zealand. The Indian team needs to win four matches in Australia to avoid relying on other teams' results for a spot in the World Test Championship final.
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra expressed that the decision to send Rahul and Jurel early suggests the team’s lack of confidence in its current batting lineup. Chopra also questioned the timing of India's squad selection, stating that the team could have named the squad after the New Zealand series, which might have led to a call-up for in-form players like Sai Sudharsan, who scored well in Australia.
Chopra further discussed the possible choices for the tour, indicating that he would prefer Rahul over Sarfaraz Khan, despite the latter's strong performance against New Zealand. He also suggested that Jurel’s presence in the squad could be beneficial due to his experience, despite concerns about Sarfaraz's technique against fast bowlers.
India will face Australia in a five-match Test series starting November 22, and with this preparation, the BCCI hopes to address the team's recent batting struggles.
