Brett Lee Recalls Sledging Battles with Harbhajan Singh
Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee opened up about his memorable on-field "sledging" exchanges with India's Harbhajan Singh. Known for his fiery pace and competitive spirit, Lee admitted that bowling to Harbhajan was a frustrating experience, as the Indian spinner often disrupted his rhythm with his antics and relentless chatter.
Harbhajan’s Unique Tactics
On the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Lee shared how Harbhajan's approach as a lower-order batsman often got under his skin. "I hated bowling to him because he used to annoy the hell out of me," Lee confessed. Harbhajan's strategy involved constant sledging and chirping, making it difficult for Lee to maintain focus.
The Australian pacer revealed that Harbhajan would often comment on his speed or attempt to engage him in verbal battles. Despite these antics, Lee holds Harbhajan in high regard. "He is an absolute legend of a bloke. He knew exactly how to get under my skin," Lee said.
Harbhajan later admitted to Lee that his behavior was intentional, designed to gain a psychological edge. "He told me he liked coming across as arrogant or chirpy. It gave him that competitive edge. But off the field, he’s an amazing guy," Lee added.
Turning Point in India-Australia Rivalry
Lee also highlighted the historic 2001 Test series between India and Australia as a pivotal moment in the cricketing rivalry between the two nations. In that series, India made a remarkable comeback, led by the iconic partnership of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the Kolkata Test.
"I was at home with my arm in a sling, watching Dravid and Laxman bat the whole day. That was the turning point. India realized they could not just match Australia but beat them," Lee recounted.
From that point onward, Indian players began displaying aggression and confidence on par with their Australian counterparts. Lee praised the evolution of Indian cricket, citing players like Virat Kohli for their assertive playing style and contrasting it with the quiet resolve of former captain MS Dhoni. "Kohli brings aggression, while Dhoni never needed words. He just did his job and never backed down," Lee observed.
A Legacy of Intense Rivalries
The sledging wars between India and Australia have produced some of the most memorable moments in cricket history. Lee’s recollections of his battles with Harbhajan serve as a reminder of the intense yet respectful rivalry between the two cricketing powerhouses.
Even though the verbal duels were heated, the camaraderie between players like Lee and Harbhajan off the field underscores the spirit of the game. "He frustrated me, but he was also giving back what we dished out. That’s what makes him a legend," Lee concluded.
