Chahal Guides PBKS to Record 16-Run Victory with Breathtaking Bowling
Yuzvendra Chahal's 4-wicket haul leads Punjab Kings to a record-breaking 16-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2025, defending the lowest total in tournament history.

In a thrilling and dramatic game at the New Chandigarh stadium, Punjab Kings (PBKS) achieved a record 16-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). This was the lowest ever defended total in IPL history. PBKS bowled out KKR for only 95, defending their tiny total of 111, which was initially considered inadequate. Yuzvendra Chahal was the architect of the victory, with 4 wickets for 28 runs, ably assisted by Marco Jansen's 3 wickets for 17 runs.
The match began promisingly for KKR. Pacing a humble target of 112, they were comfortably placed at 60/2 in 7 overs. They had to get 52 runs from the remaining 9 overs, which should have been a cakewalk. KKR's scoring rate was poised to take them towards the mark in a little over 14 overs, and help them gain points in the standings. But things changed dramatically as PBKS staged a comeback in the middle overs, with Chahal and Jansen leading the show. KKR's middle order disintegrated, and they got bowled out for mere 95, unable to come back from the collapse.
PBKS's batting had previously been a story of a bright beginning and then a huge meltdown. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who opened the batting, gave PBKS a flying start, with Arya hitting some good shots. But after the opening stand was broken, PBKS lost wickets at a fast rate. Middle-order failed to get going, and PBKS were left at 86/8 in the 11th over, their total poised to become one of the lowest in the history of the IPL. Shashank Singh and Xavier Bartlett managed to take them over 100 with a late comeback, but not enough to get them to a greater total.
KKR's pursuit began with a premature wicket as Sunil Narine was bowled early, followed by Quinton de Kock also not able to make any mark. But KKR was looking as good as ever as skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi hit frequent boundaries. The run rate that was needed was still within reach, but suddenly everything changed as the two established batsmen got out in rapid succession. Chahal’s magic turned the game, as he took wickets at regular intervals, and soon KKR was in deep trouble. From 62/2, KKR slumped to 79/8 by the 12th over.
Chahal's master spell proved to be the match turning. His wickets were those of Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh, as well as getting Rana bowled. With a late cameo by Andre Russell, who had smashed two sixes, KKR could not muster a recovery. They would have needed a significant knock by Russell to come even close, but Jansen saw it through as he bagged his third and got Russell for 25 to seal the PBKS victory.
PBKS's victory was a great surprise following their dismal performance with the bat. The bowling was top-notch, with Chahal and Jansen at the forefront. The victory took PBKS to fourth position in the table, and they now anticipate their next encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore. KKR, on the other hand, will have to take stock of this shocking defeat ahead of their next match against Gujarat Titans.
Going forward, PBKS will play Royal Challengers Bangalore in consecutive games, beginning at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in their next match on April 18. KKR, with some days of contemplation, will host Gujarat Titans for their next encounter on April 21.
