Coco Gauff Seeks Progress in Saudi Arabia During WTA Finals; Contemplates Future Participation

Coco Gauff has voiced her desire for tangible progress regarding women's rights and social change in Saudi Arabia, indicating that she "probably wouldn’t come back" for future tennis events if she perceives a lack of improvement. The world No. 3 is one of the eight players competing in the WTA Tour Finals, marking the tournament's debut in Saudi Arabia, with plans to remain in the kingdom for the next two years.

As Gauff prepares for her first match, she emphasizes the importance of witnessing firsthand the changes discussed in her conversations with the WTA and the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. While she has expressed encouragement by what she has seen thus far, Gauff is clear that her continued participation hinges on ongoing development in the country. "If I felt uncomfortable or felt like nothing's happening, then maybe I probably wouldn't come back," she stated.

Advocating for Change

Drawing parallels to her experience growing up in America as part of the Black community, Gauff explained that real change often occurs gradually. She referenced the philosophy shared by tennis legend Billie Jean King that engaging in dialogue and participation is essential for instigating change. However, prominent figures like Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert argue that Saudi Arabia has not made sufficient progress to merit hosting such a significant event in women's tennis.

Gauff, alongside fellow American Jessica Pegula, highlighted the importance of community engagement and the tennis programs linked to the tournament, particularly the Saudi Tennis Association’s goal of introducing one million people to the sport by 2030. “I think sports for me is the easiest way to kind of introduce that,” Gauff noted, affirming her belief in the potential of sports to open doors for social reform.
