CSK Signs 17-Year-Old Ayush Mhatre as a Replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad
Chennai Super Kings signed 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for injured Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2025 to strengthen their top-order batting ranks.

Five-time IPL championship-winning side Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed a new young gun in their team in the form of 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre. He will be taking the place of CSK's regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad, unfortunately, fractured his elbow and has been ruled out for the rest of the IPL season. This forced the management to appoint MS Dhoni as captain for the remainder of the campaign. CSK also required a replacement for Gaikwad in the batting lineup, however. After a successful trial for two weeks, Mhatre was offered an IPL contract to replace the team for the remainder of the season.
Ayush Mhatre is already well set in domestic cricket. He has played nine first-class matches for Mumbai, in which he has scored two centuries and a half-century. He has also played seven List A matches, during which he made a good 181 runs off Nagaland. Mhatre has the skill to convert decent starts into colossal scores, like he did while playing an immense 148-run innings against Saurashtra during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Mhatre's career in cricket as a professional began early in life. He opened up about playing the sport from the age of six, but his serious cricketing career began at the age of ten. He was with his family, especially his grandfather, Laxmikant Naik, who took turns with the responsibility of taking him for practice sessions every day. Despite the long hours of work and travel, Ayush never complained, and his family soon realized that his commitment and sacrifices were finally starting to pay off.
Growing up in a modest background, Ayush credits his parents for the unwavering support they offered him, even when times were financially tough. He said his parents never made him feel the financial struggles they were facing. For instance, even when his cricket bat got broken, he never had to ask for a new one. His father would always take him to local trains so that he was not subject to any extraneous negativity or diversion, keeping Ayush focused on cricket.
When Ayush was left out during India captain Rohit Sharma's comeback to domestic cricket in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, Mhatre shared a touching selfie and message on social media for his hero, Rohit Sharma. This too became popular in no time and earned Mhatre even greater respect and admiration from fans and cricket lovers.
With him now getting to play for one of the most successful teams in the IPL, however, Ayush Mhatre's persistence and dedication also do seem to be finally paying off. As he joins CSK, he will not only be filling the shoes of an important player but also be a part of the ranks of a team renowned for being able to mold young talent. With MS Dhoni as his captain and the experienced team behind him, Mhatre will proceed to leave his mark in the professional cricketing arena. His is a story of determination, family support, and the right opportunity at the right time. This could be the beginning of a long and glorious career in the IPL and beyond.
