Dubai: A Neutral Ground for India in the Champions Trophy 2025
Dubai becomes a level playing field for India in the Champions Trophy 2025, impacting the team tactics and tournament dynamics in the high-pressure tournament.

As the Champions Trophy 2025 enters its most decisive semi-final phase, a pertinent question in mind is: Does Team India enjoy an edge because they will play all their matches in Dubai? Although their limited travel would appear to work in their favor, Indian captain Rohit Sharma shoots down such suggestions, insisting that Dubai isn't home to them and that the conditions remain as volatile for them as they are for other teams.
India's So-Called 'Home' Advantage-A Misconception
The semi-finalists at the tournament have experienced widely differing travel itineraries. Australia have played at three different grounds, while New Zealand have witnessed all four locations at the tournament. South Africa, although having not played a single match at Dubai, had already spent a while there with expectations of playing a semi-final that didn't eventuate. However, the Proteas were not bothered by the extra travelling and even appeared to look forward to playing in Dubai, especially for the opportunity to play a golf course.
India, however, have been camped in Dubai throughout the tournament, hosting all their games at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. But Rohit Sharma insists that their stay in the city does not translate into an advantage.
"It's not as if we know what happens on these pitches," Rohit said before India's semi-final match against Australia. "We don't know which pitch they will play on, but we will have to accommodate whatever it is. And this is not our home neither - this is Dubai. We don't play so many games here; it's new for us too."
A Pitch Full of Uncertainty
Even though they played three games on the same pitch, India have faced a range of playing conditions. The pitch where they played New Zealand was also utilized for their match against Bangladesh, whereas the semi-final will be played on the same surface where they had already played Pakistan. This has raised questions about whether India will have an advantage because they are familiar with the ground.
But Rohit Sharma emphasized that conditions have been anything but uniform. "The three games we have played had similar surfaces, but each one behaved differently," he said. "Against New Zealand, their pacers were able to get swing and seam movement, which we did not see in our previous matches. The evening conditions introduce additional factors, such as the slight cold, which enables the ball to swing."
The unpredictability of the pitch implies that both batters and bowlers have to be extremely versatile. "A surface can look identical, but when you're playing on it, it will play differently. Batters have to judge which shots are secure, and bowlers have to vary their lengths accordingly." The ever-changing nature of the Dubai pitch has left all teams scrambling and eliminated any perceived Indian edge.
The Battle Against Australia-A Nerve Test
Australia, India's semi-final rival, have followed a different path in the tournament. They reached the semis mainly because two of their matches were washed out and they convincingly beat England. In spite of that, their experience of playing in big games cannot be downplayed.
Historically, Australia have dominated India in knockout contests. In 2023 alone, they defeated India in two big finals—the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup final. Rohit Sharma would be very well aware of the task at hand.
"Look, it's a fantastic opposition to play against," he said. "All we need to do is concentrate on what we've been doing for the past three games and go out there with the same attitude. We know how Australia play, and we anticipate a close contest."
A semi-final necessarily involves increased pressure, and Rohit anticipates a nail-biting contest. "Australia have been such a good side all these years, so we will anticipate some fightback, and some nervous moments in the middle. There will be pressure on both sides to win this game."
Final Thoughts-The Game is Wide Open
Though India's sustained presence in Dubai has raised questions about a potential edge, the vagaries of the pitches and the general conditions of the tournament have kept the playing field level. With a strong team like Australia between them and a final spot, India will require more than a sense of familiarity with the ground—they will require execution, flexibility, and nerves of steel.
As cricket supporters across the globe prepare for this blockbuster semi-final, one fact is certain: Dubai might be the venue, but the game will be fought and won by the side that most effectively acclimatizes to the continually changing conditions.
