The Weber Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) will soon crown its Team of the Decade, celebrating the league's most influential players over the past ten years. This milestone comes as the WBBL continues to grow in popularity, showcasing some of the world’s best female cricketers.
A specially appointed panel of experts will play a key role in narrowing down a list of 50 standout players to form the ultimate 12-player squad. Chaired by Cricket Australia Director Clea Smith, the panel includes cricket legends such as Mel Jones, Lisa Sthalekar, Matthew Mott, Quentin Hull, Laura Jolly, and Alistair Dobson. The final team will be announced at the Weber WBBL|10 Final on Sunday, December 1.
However, fans will also have the opportunity to make their voices heard. Starting November 11, public voting will be open through the Big Bash App, with votes weighted equally alongside those from the expert panel. The players eligible for selection have all played at least 60 WBBL matches prior to this season.
Key areas of the selection will include choosing the openers and top-order players, a challenge given the dominance of Australian stars such as Beth Mooney, Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Grace Harris, Tahlia McGrath, and Elyse Villani, alongside contributions from overseas players like Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, Mignon du Preez, and Lizelle Lee. Uncapped players such as Katie Mack and Georgia Redmayne could also be in the mix for a spot.
The selection panel will also face a tough call when it comes to picking the spin bowlers. Jess Jonassen, the WBBL’s all-time leading wicket-taker, along with Amanda-Jade Wellington and Molly Strano, who are both in the 150-wickets club, will all be vying for a place. The pace bowling slots also feature some big names, including Australian Megan Schutt and South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp.
Wicketkeeping will be another critical decision, with Mooney, Healy, and Redmayne all competing for the gloves. Former Adelaide Strikers keeper Tegan McPharlin, with 91 career dismissals, will also be in contention.
The selection process will consider more than just runs and wickets. Factors such as batting strike rate, bowling economy rate, and key performances in finals and big matches will also play a significant role in the final decisions.
The 12-player Team of the Decade will be revealed at the WBBL|10 Final on December 1, rounding off the celebrations of a decade of thrilling women's cricket. Fans are encouraged to participate in the voting, ensuring that their favourite players have a say in this historic selection.
