Gill and Pant Shine as India Reaches 195-5 at Lunch in Final Test
Shubman Gill was in fine form, not out on 70, while Ravindra Jadeja provided solid support with 10 runs as the team aimed to bridge the gap after resuming from an overnight 86-4. The sweltering conditions at Wankhede Stadium didn’t deter the batsmen, as Pant played aggressively, scoring 60 runs in just 59 balls before falling to Ish Sodhi.
On November 2, India showcased a spirited performance in the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant leading the charge. By lunch on Day 2, India had clawed back to a commendable 195-5, in response to New Zealand's first innings total of 235.
After a shaky start that saw India collapse late on the first day, Pant helped to settle the nerves with an explosive display, starting with three boundaries off Ajaz Patel in the first over. His performance included significant hits over the boundary and clever singles, allowing him to reach his half-century in a rapid 36 deliveries—the fastest by an Indian against New Zealand.
Gill, who received a lifeline on 45 when substitute Mark Chapman dropped a straightforward catch, demonstrated his ability to build an innings, ultimately marking his seventh Test half-century. However, he remained aware of the missed opportunities for New Zealand to apply pressure.
As India looked to stabilize their innings, Pant's wicket was a turning point, ending a productive partnership of 96 runs for the fifth wicket. New Zealand, having secured a historic series victory earlier, were left to regroup and strategize as they faced a formidable Indian batting lineup.
With Gill still at the crease and Jadeja providing valuable support, India aims to surpass New Zealand's total and take control of the match as it progresses into the afternoon session.
