Glenn Phillips Exits Gujarat Titans After Injury Setback
Gujarat Titans' Glenn Phillips was eliminated from IPL 2025 due to a groin injury while fielding against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and it is a big blow to the team.

The Gujarat Titans have been dealt a shocking blow as Glenn Phillips has departed the team during the middle of the season. The New Zealand all-rounder had not featured in a single match for the Titans in IPL 2025 prior to his unexpected departure. It has now emerged that he suffered a groin injury which compelled him to head back to New Zealand. The precise time of the injury is said to have occurred in a match away against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. Although the fans were anticipating seeing him play this season the groin problem now excludes him from further involvement.
Phillips was retained by the Gujarat Titans at his reserve price of INR 2 crore through the IPL auction. He entered the tournament on the strength of a good show in the Champions Trophy where New Zealand finished runners-up to India. Famous for his athleticism and breathtaking catches the 28-year-old had displayed his class in Pakistan and Dubai during the tournament. His all-round skills and vibrant presence on the field made him a sought-after choice for the Titans.
Even though he did not get to play a single game for the franchise this season his potential contribution was eagerly awaited. Sadly with the injury now confirmed his season is over even before it began. The Titans have officially released a statement confirming that Glenn Phillips has returned to New Zealand after suffering the groin injury during the game against SRH. They also wished him a quick recovery.
Gujarat Titans so far have been having a good run in IPL 2025. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill they are placed at number one in the points table with eight points from five games. They have won matches against major teams such as Mumbai Indians Royal Challengers Bengaluru Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. Their lone defeat till now was in the first match of the season against Punjab Kings at their home stadium in Ahmedabad on March 25.
Even though Phillips is not included in the playing eleven, his absence will still be felt since the team now has one fewer option in their overseas line-up. He is the second overseas player from the Gujarat Titans camp to become unavailable this season. Previously, Kagiso Rabada had to leave for South Africa owing to a family emergency. An official word on when Rabada could come back to the team has not yet been given.
This now leaves the Titans with just five overseas players available to them which are Jos Buttler Sherfane Rutherford Rashid Khan Gerald Coetzee and Karim Janat. Each team is permitted to have a maximum of eight foreign players in their roster so the Titans now have a weaker pool to pick from should injuries or issues with form start to affect them in the subsequent matches.
With their next game against Lucknow Super Giants on April 12 the emphasis is on how the team would handle their combinations in the future. The Titans have established positive momentum with four successive wins and would be eager to carry on that trend. However the decreased overseas options can affect their team strategy in the upcoming games.
For the time being, Glenn Phillips' fans will have to wait patiently for his recovery and wish to see him on the field once again later this year. The Gujarat Titans have sent out a complete message of support and respect for his choice to concentrate on recovery in his native country. Injuries are a sad part of any sports activity and for a player such as Phillips who has so much dynamism on the field it is certainly disheartening to miss out on him.
Yet again the Gujarat Titans have displayed strength and depth within their team. Without some of their main overseas players they have still been playing well and overpowering their competitors. Whether or not they decide to sign a replacement for Phillips will be interesting to see but at present the franchise appears to be keen to continue their winning streak with the men they have at their disposal.
Injuries such as these remind us that cricket is a physically and mentally demanding sport. For Glenn Phillips this could very well be a temporary hiatus before he makes a comeback in full force. Fans will certainly miss his explosive nature and game-changing ability but for the time being all eyes will be on the Titans as they try to continue their winning streak in IPL 2025.
