The Indian government nudged sports infrastructure and youth development towards further developments on Tuesday with the setting aside of Rs 3,794.30 cr for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Union Budget for 2025-26. As per the budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the current fiscal year has increased by Rs 351.98 crore as compared to the previous fiscal year. That would mean in funding, so the government is interested and committed to nurturing young talent and resources in the sport-related field.
KIndiahelo : Giving the Most
Among the many schemes getting a shot in the arm, the flagship scheme Khelo India has reached the pinnacle of recipients with Rs 1,000 crore for the year 2025-26. That is nearly over double the amount that was provided to Rs 800 crore for the year 2024-25. The Khelo India scheme assists the government in their effort to find talent at the grassroot level, give them adequate training, the necessary facilities and all other supporting elements to grow into champions.
Mansukh Mandaviya, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, appreciated the growth in the budget, saying this would further improve sports infrastructure, support Khelo India and youth-centric development initiatives. In a tremendous boost to the sports scenario, though no big-ticket international events like Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or Asian Games next year, further speaks of long-term vision on the sector.
More support national sports federations and training facilities
The government will be increasing financial aid to National Sports Federations from Rs 340 crore to Rs 400 crore, which will surely see better management and training and take more Indian players into international tournaments. Besides the infrastructural support all over the country for sports, funding for the flagship Sports Authority of India (SAI), mainly responsible for conducting national-level training camps, has also been increased from earlier Rs 815 crore to Rs 830 crore.
In addition, the budget of the National Dope Testing Laboratory has also been enhanced. It was Rs 18.70 crore in 2024-25, and it has been increased to Rs 23 crore in 2025-26. The budget of the National Anti-Doping Agency has also been enhanced from Rs 20.30 crore to Rs 24.30 crore. This shows the seriousness of the government about fair play and integrity in sports.
Investment in Jammu and Kashmir's Sports Infrastructure
Besides the sports development, as a scarcity of structures was the only factor preventing the development of sports in this area, the government has sanctioned Rs 20 crore already for improving the state of sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. This is an increase from the previous year's budget of Rs 6 crore. It will once again be an impetus for the youngsters of this region to hone their skills and perform equally with the best.
Youths programs and community engagement funding
Apart from direct funding on sports, a bigger proportion of the allocation is into youth development schemes. NSS has seen a huge increase of Rs 450 crore from last year's amount, that is, Rs 200 crore. NSS contributes much towards the grooming of young minds through social service and participation in the community in the broad scheme of things proposed by the government in youth development.
It is from Rs 11.70 crore to Rs 55 crore that the multilateral youth exchange programmes and contribution to international organisations budget has rocketed. Besides providing Indian youths with global exposure and opportunities for cultural exchange, this platform would help them to enjoy broader avenues while generating useful contacts.
Budget cuts in some places
The general increase in budget was there but trimmed some allocations. The monetary incentive for the sportspersons went from Rs 42.65 crore to Rs 37 crore. National Programme for Youth and Adolescent Development and Youth Hostels too were reduced. All these cuts speak of a new priority that might be more money in huge development projects.
Indian Olympic Hopes and Future Plans
Hence, the budget hike runs in tandem with India's great sporting aspirations, and it is only when it will be able to host the Olympic Games of 2036. A letter of intent had already been sent to the International Olympic Committee declaring India's intent to host one of the world's greatest sporting events. More training facilities, better anti-doping initiatives, and support systems for athletes will be a step towards further enhancement of India's global sporting profile.
A Step Towards Sporting Future
The Union Budget 2025-26 vividly depicts the commitment of the government towards the development of sports excellence and the empowerment of youth across the nation. Investment in areas such as programs like Khelo India, infrastructure development, and support to the nation's sports department will create a long-term growth pattern of the sector. Such efforts can help India to have world-class players, as much as develop its grassroots and other levels to popularize sport to the next rank of citizen from the very highest to the mass.
