Hardik Pandya Retains Captaincy for Mumbai Indians Following Tough IPL 2024
Pandya's tenure as captain in IPL 2024 was marred by difficulties, as he faced criticism from fans, including being booed at several venues, such as Wankhede Stadium, after his trade from Gujarat Titans and assuming captaincy from Rohit. During the season, he managed to score only 216 runs at a strike rate of 143 and took 11 wickets with an economy rate of 10.75.
Hardik Pandya will continue to lead the Mumbai Indians (MI) as captain despite a challenging season in the IPL 2024, where the franchise finished at the bottom of the standings for only the second time in its history. MI made the announcement on Thursday, confirming that they have retained key players including Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025.
The retention of these high-profile players is notable, as MI successfully secured their core for a total of INR 75 crore, leaving them with INR 45 crore to further enhance their squad during the auction. Bumrah, who has become a cornerstone of MI, was retained for INR 18 crore, marking the first time he has been the top retention in his IPL career. Both Hardik and Suryakumar will earn INR 16.35 crore each, while Rohit was retained for INR 16.30 crore and Tilak for INR 8 crore.
Rohit expressed satisfaction with his position as the team's fourth retention. "Since I have retired from the format, I think this is the perfect spot for me," he stated in a video released by the franchise. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing players representing the national team at the highest level.
Reflecting on his continued role, Hardik noted, "It's been fantastic. I think I have received a lot of love back. It means the world to me, reason being, as I've always mentioned, my journey started here. Everything I've achieved in my life has been part of Mumbai Indians." He reiterated his commitment to the team, recalling past successes and expressing confidence in a stronger comeback in IPL 2025. "We are going to come all guns blazing. Brotherhood, friendship, and at the same point of time we are going to back each other no matter what happens," he added.

Akash Ambani, the owner of Mumbai Indians, shared his enthusiasm for retaining a strong leadership core: "We are thrilled that the strong legacy of MI will be carried forward by Jasprit, Surya, Hardik, Rohit, and Tilak—players who have become synonymous with our team and the brand of cricket we stand for." He mentioned that the MI core group and coaching staff have collaborated closely over the past month to establish a unified vision for the franchise, reinforcing MI's commitment to building trust and ownership among its core group, fans, and stakeholders.
Additionally, MI has reappointed Mahela Jayawardene as head coach for IPL 2025 following the disappointing finish in the previous season.
