How Yuvraj Singh Assisted Abhishek Sharma to Remain Focused and Shining Bright

Abhishek Sharma recently took a major leap in his cricketing career when he received his first Central Contract from the BCCI. He is now listed under Grade C in the player retainership of 2024 to 2025. But it did not happen without a struggle. Behind this triumph is the assistance and stern advice of former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Abhishek has regularly mentioned that Yuvraj was the key to his cricket life and helped him turn out to be the player he is right now.

Yuvraj's father Yograj Singh explained how it all began. A long time back, when Yuvraj was playing in youth tournaments that were being held by the Punjab Cricket Association, Yuvraj saw something unique in Abhishek. When Yuvraj contacted the PCA for information on Abhishek's performance they informed him that Abhishek was only a bowler. But Yuvraj did not think that way and thought he would dig more. When he verified the original records he came to know Abhishek already had 24 centuries at that point of time. This astounded Yuvraj who didn't know the reason why an exceptionally good batter was being treated as a bowler only in the records. He thought certain individuals were endeavoring to debar Abhishek because they were jealous of him or harbored personal prejudice against him. Yuvraj did not want the talent to go in vain.

Thus Yuvraj made a drastic move and thought of mentoring Abhishek in person. Yograj Singh informed that Abhishek's dad was struggling to keep his son's flashy way of life under control. Abhishek used to enjoy partying late in the night and picking up girlfriends which could have impacted his concentration on the game. Yuvraj intervened timely. He ensured Abhishek disciplined himself in his life. Yuvraj even asked someone to keep Abhishek locked in so that he would not go out in the evenings. He instructed Abhishek to return home by 9 pm and get up at 5 in the morning. He monitored and kept an eye close on Abhishek to ensure that Abhishek was determined about his career.

This strict regime may have been tough but it paid off. It kept Abhishek away from distraction and developed him with a solid mindset. Yuvraj like a protective big brother kept Abhishek on the right track. With someone like Yuvraj as guide Abhishek could remain focused and continue working hard for his goals. Today all the hard work is paying dividends.

Yograj further said that Yuvraj applied a similar approach for guiding Shubman Gill. These two youngsters had enormous potential but lacked some guide to get them going on the right track. Yograj averred that if a diamond is taken proper care of by another diamond then it will glitter more than before. This was exactly what was done for Abhishek and Shubman. They were like unpolished diamonds, i.e., rough around the edges and they needed to be properly guided. If they had fallen into wrong hands their career could have been ruined like most other players in India who were talented but did not have a proper backing.

Now that Abhishek Sharma is getting noticed by the BCCI and receiving a Central Contract he has proved that Yuvraj's attempt was not in vain. This also indicates how crucial mentors are in a player's life. Without Yuvraj's assistance Abhishek might not have achieved this.
