Injury Blow for Amelia Kerr, Out of India ODIs and Likely Most of WBBL Season
Her absence could affect New Zealand’s bid to improve their standing in the Women’s ODI Championship, where they currently sit in sixth place out of 10 teams. A top-six finish is crucial to securing direct qualification for the 2025 ODI World Cup.
New Zealand allrounder Amelia Kerr has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against India after sustaining a grade-one tear in her left quadricep. Kerr suffered the injury during the first ODI, where India clinched a 59-run victory. Scans confirmed the injury would require approximately three weeks of recovery, sidelining her not only from the ODIs but also from much of her planned WBBL campaign with the Sydney Sixers, who had signed her as a platinum-category pick. If her recovery extends to the full three-week estimate, she could miss eight out of the Sixers' ten league games.
New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer expressed the team's disappointment, noting Kerr’s significance to the squad. "Everyone knows how much of an integral part of this team Melie is, so we'll certainly miss her but we're wishing her a speedy recovery," he said. Kerr, who played a key role in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup victory as the leading wicket-taker, was the standout performer in the opening ODI as well, claiming 4 for 42 and scoring an unbeaten 25 off 23 in the chase.
