Jake Fraser-McGurk Faces a Harsh Test in IPL 2025
Jake Fraser-McGurk, the Australian youngster, has a challenging season in IPL 2025 with Delhi Capitals, unable to live up to his promising start. Can he recover?

Jake Fraser-McGurk came onto the scene in his first season of the IPL like a whirlwind. He had played last year as a late pick-up for Lungi Ngidi but made a huge impact. He hammered 330 runs off a strike rate of 234 which is one of the best ever in a season for a player who has faced more than 50 balls. His bold, baseball-style swing and fearless hitting turned heads and made him famous overnight. But the story took a dramatic turn in IPL 2025 as bowlers have devised means to stop and contain him.
The young Australian has been quite different in this season. He has survived only once in the Powerplay in his first six games. In these matches he has made a mere 55 runs with 9.17 average and a strike rate of 105.76. He is one among the lowest in terms of runs scored as an opening batsman in IPL history after six games. Only a total of five openers had worse beginnings and only one was an overseas opener. This depicts how tough times have been for Fraser-McGurk in his second year. His current state is a huge difference from the previous year when he impressed people with dominating and swift runs.
One of the most important elements of Fraser-McGurk's game is playing a ball in the air. Out of his 15 dismissals in his career in the IPL, 14 have been caught and only one has been run-out. This indicates that bowlers are coming at his weakness and making him play a strength as a weakness. In IPL 2024 he had faced 141 balls and hit 54 of them in the air. Out of those he had scored 221 runs at a striking rate of 409.25 which was phenomenal. But this year it has not happened like that. He has hit only 12 of his 52 balls in the air and got out six times from them. That is such a decline in both success and also in confidence. His aerial average has come down from 27.62 in 2024 to mere 3.83 in 2025. This indicates the way bowlers have evidently solved his game plan and are employing smarter field placements and bowling lines to halt him.
A recent instance was during last season when he faced LSG. The field was laid out with a long-on being placed right on the boundary in the first over itself. Fraser-McGurk was inclined to attempt a big shot but he mis-hit it and got caught at the same place. It was an obvious tactic and it paid off. Bowlers now are not only planning but also implementing well against him. This season the fast bowlers are bowling wide lines outside the off stump and making the ball swing away from his scoring area. In the first game against LSG this year Shardul Thakur bowled such a ball and Fraser-McGurk again was caught at long-off. Yet another game against CSK revealed the same strategy from Khaleel Ahmed who continued to angle the ball across and eventually got the reward with a slightly wider ball that seamed just enough.
Statistics reveal that in 2024 bowlers bowled 58 percent of their balls outside off to him. But in 2025 that figure has risen to 64.3 percent. Out of those deliveries he has been dismissed four times and scored only at 66.67 strike rate. This information informs us that bowlers are forcing him into errors by making him play shots which he is not so confident about. His baseball-like batting that used to fetch him quick runs is now proving to be a liability as bowlers have learned where to bowl and where to put the fielders. He is being tested in each match and it is reflecting in his statistics and performance.
Even with this bad spell the Capitals have continued to win matches and have taken him along with their strong team effort. But the clock is ticking against Fraser-McGurk. The [bowlers have discovered his vulnerability] and are exploiting it over and over again. If he wishes to remain in the playing eleven and enjoy a longer IPL career he will have to change quickly. This could involve working on fresh shots or becoming more discerning about what he attempts to play in the air. He still has the talent and ability that made him a rising star but now it is about making wise decisions and advancing his game.
