Jos Buttler Steps Down as England White-Ball Captain Following Champions Trophy Exit
Jos Buttler resigns as England white-ball captain following their Champions Trophy 2025 exit. A significant leadership shift is in store for England cricket.

In a decision that marks the end of an era, Jos Buttler has stepped down as England's white-ball captain following the team's dismal early Champions Trophy 2025 exit. The decision was taken in Karachi ahead of England's final group-stage match against South Africa, bringing Buttler's leadership era to a sudden end.
A Tough Call Following a Tumultuous Campaign
Buttler, 34, cited England's dismal performance in the tournament as one of the main reasons why he had resigned. England lost consecutive games to Australia and Afghanistan and got only as far as the group stage. As he answered questions at an interview held in a press conference on Friday (February 28), Buttler was upset but remained adamant that resigning was in the best interest of himself as well as the team.
It's the right option for me, and it's the right option for the team," Buttler added. "Maybe someone else can come in, work closely with Baz [Brendon McCullum], and get the team back to where it needs to be.".
England's disappointing Champions Trophy performance was an extension of their lackluster run in recent one-day internationals. They had, before the tournament, lost a 0-3 series to India. Those defeats were added to an already bleak spell for the team, and Buttler's resignation was in essence a fait accompli.
A Captaincy Tenure Marked by Highs and Lows
Buttler took over England's white-ball sides in 2022 after Eoin Morgan's retirement. His captaincy started on a positive note—winning the T20 World Cup in Australia later in the year. But from there, things began to go awry, as England were unable to find consistency in ODIs and T20Is.
In the 2023 ODI World Cup, England failed to progress past the group stage, one of their poorest recent performances. The problems continued in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they were eliminated by India in the semifinals in a one-sided defeat in Guyana.
With the awareness that the team required a new direction, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) appointed Brendon McCullum as head coach of the white-ball teams in early 2025, in addition to his Test coaching role. However, Buttler-McCullum's partnership failed to yield rapid results. England lost nine out of ten white-ball matches in 2025 before being knocked out of the Champions Trophy, demonstrating that a change in leadership was necessary.
Statistical Overview of Buttler's Captaincy
As their captain in this time, Buttler had led England in 44 ODIs and 51 T20Is and taken them to victory 18 and 26 times respectively. His winning record compared to losses as a captain of the ODIs was the poorest for England captains who had played more than 15 games as the captain. All these statistics together with England's dismal performance in high-stake tournaments further pressed Buttler's captaincy into scrutiny.
Reflecting on the captaincy stint, Buttler embraced the disappointment but reiterated the privilege of England captaincy. "There is disappointment and sadness, but at the same time I know how much of a privilege it is to lead my country," he said. "I was actually looking forward to working with Brendon and hoped for a quick return, but it hasn't quite worked out like that."
Brendon McCullum's Support and Future Prospects
Brendon McCullum, England’s head coach, expressed his admiration for Buttler’s dedication and contributions as captain. “I feel incredibly sad for Jos. We’ve all seen over the last couple of years how much he has invested in captaining this team and trying to get the best out of the players around him,” McCullum stated.
He also reminded the critics about Buttler's achievement, particularly his captaincy in the 2022 T20 World Cup win. "People forget he won a World Cup a couple of years ago. That is a big deal, and no one can take that away from him," McCullum said.
Despite stepping down as captain, Buttler remains an integral part of England’s squad. McCullum hinted at plans to maximize Buttler’s impact as a player, stating, “He’s still a huge player for us moving forward. We’ll look at ways to get the best out of him.”
What’s Next for England?
With Buttler's resignation as captain, England has the task at hand to choose an appropriate successor to lead the team into the future. The decision will prove to be pivotal in determining England's future in the white-ball genre with global events lined up in the near future.
While Buttler's resignation marks the end of an interesting chapter, it also offers an opportunity for rejuvenation. England will need to regroup, re-strategize, and rebuild under new management if they want to return to being a powerhouse white-ball cricket nation.
