KKR's Thrashing Defeat -An Episode of Lack of Game Awareness
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lost decisively to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025 by a whopping 16 runs, while losing from 62/2 to 95 all out. KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane ascribed the loss to insufficient game awareness and failed team batting.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 15, 2025, in a match which highlighted the importance of game awareness in cricket. Despite being chasing a very small total of 112 runs, KKR miserably failed by losing eight of their last wickets for a mere 33 runs. It was a match that both teams got bowled out in inside 16 overs, which was a rare contest between bat and ball in the current IPL season.
KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane was quick to defend the pitch, stating that it wasn't the surface that bowled them out. According to Rahane, the wicket was good and not difficult to play on. He explained that the ball came a little late, but that was not an excuse for the batting department's collapse. He further stated that their bowling department had done their job to perfection by restricting PBKS to a low score of 111 runs. KKR started well in their chase with a 55-run partnership between Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and by the eighth over, they were at 62/2. The match now seemed in their favor. But after Rahane's departure, KKR lost their direction completely.
The match's turning point came when KKR's chase fell apart. Despite still needing 50 runs from the remaining 75 balls with eight wickets remaining, the team could not hold their ground. Rahane retrospectively viewed the collapse, accepting that it wasn't about playing big shots but rotating the strike. He agreed that KKR's batting line-up didn't do that, and that's the reason why they collapsed. Rahane also took responsibility as captain, explaining that they weren't able to chase the score because of group batting failures.
While the low asking rate was never a concern, there wasn't clarity and communication between the batsmen which led to unwanted losses. Rahane himself explained about his own questionable dismissal when he became LBW trapped by Yuzvendra Chahal after a sweep shot. Even though replays suggested that the ball was miles outside off-stump, Rahane did not review the decision as he had uncertain communication with his teammate about sending it for review. He felt that he should keep the review in mind and not waste it on an uncertain call. Rahane has said that the entire team was required to introspect their individual performances and play better in subsequent matches.
Rahane even commented on the strategic choices by KKR within the match, i.e., the not inclusion of Moeen Ali from the playing eleven. Since there was some turn in the pitch, it must have been maybe felt by a majority that featuring Moeen as a third spinner would have been a proper choice. But Rahane explained that once they analyzed the pitch, they decided at KKR that they would play three pacers and two spinners. In traditional terms, traditionally two spinners have been the right combination in this ground, and they decided based on what they thought best suited the conditions. Even though Moeen Ali had performed well in the previous matches, the management believed that his services on the field were not required on this pitch.
Rahane repeated that it wasn't always about sixes and how to boost the net run rate. He reiterated that at times in T20 cricket a maiden over or lower strike rate might be acceptable, given the fact that the wicket was supporting the bowlers. Rahane emphasized that players tend to get carried away with attempting flashy shots, but cricket is about realizing the situation and playing intelligently as per the requirements of the match. He admitted that KKR's poor game awareness resulted in their loss, particularly when they didn't rotate the strike and struggle through the chase.
While the absence of Moeen Ali was one of the strategic decisions that were criticized, Rahane insisted that it was not complacency. He dismissed any possibilities of KKR being overconfident before playing the game. Rahane made sure that the team was seasoned and confident enough to handle any situation. The real issue, he asserted, was poor batting and not adapting to the situation in the game when it mattered.
Finally, KKR's crushing defeat came down to poor game awareness and execution of batting basics. Though they were well-placed to chase their score, the team fell apart when they did not realize the game situation and were unable to adapt to the conditions. For KKR, this match was a lesson that in cricket, especially in T20s, game awareness and being aware of the game situation are the keys to success.
