KL Rahul's Versatility Gives Delhi Capitals' Solid Begin in IPL 2025
KL Rahul's all-around performance provided Delhi Capitals with a solid foundation in IPL 2025 as his well-balanced play with the bat assisted in gaining early momentum.

KL Rahul is showing once again why he is among the most valuable and versatile players of IPL. Earlier in 2016 he had showcased his capability of adapting and playing in various batting roles for RCB. Now in 2025 he is doing exactly the same for his new franchise Delhi Capitals. Rahul didn't even realize that he was to be playing against Chennai Super Kings until a matter of a few hours before the game. Only it was indicated that he could come in as a replacement in case Faf du Plessis wasn't up to playing. That amount of last-minute notification would unnerve any player but Rahul remained calm and dignified.
Although Rahul had been practicing to bat first before the tournament began his plans were altered when Harry Brook was out late. That made the team alter the batting order and Rahul was instructed to bat in the middle order. He played a niggling but handy innings at number four in the last game. Then there was the game against CSK where he went back to the top of the order and played a crucial role in DC's victory. His powerplay shots were crisp and well timed. He also played intelligent cricket against CSK's spinners demonstrating his awareness and ability.
This talent to switch roles is nothing new for Rahul. In ODI cricket he tends to bat at five or six for India. Moving between the top position and position four in the 2016 IPL season playing for RCB, he continued to score bountifully. Actually, he averaged over 60 while batting at number four that year. Very few have managed to perform well at various positions like Rahul. All of them took their teams deep in the tournament when they displayed this batting flexibility. Rohit had won it in 2015 Rayudu in 2018 and Rahul came close to doing it in 2016.
Now in Delhi Rahul gets a second opportunity to demonstrate that he can be the glue that holds a batting line-up together. If du Plessis recovers from his injury Rahul can return to the middle order. But if Jake Fraser-McGurk persists to struggle at the top the team has the option of pushing Rahul up again. This also makes way for Donovan Ferreira to step into the middle order and provide balance. It is evident that DC now has choices and Rahul's versatility is a major reason for that.
Over the past couple of years Rahul has been criticized for his performances in the IPL. Some have questioned his intent and strike rate in T20 cricket. Due to that he has not played for India in the shortest format since the 2022 T20 World Cup. But this season is giving him a new beginning. If he continues to play well in various roles he may get another opportunity in the national T20 team. For now, however, his attention is completely on IPL 2025 and taking Delhi all the way.
Delhi’s start to this season has been their best in 16 years. They have won their first three games and are the only unbeaten team so far. This is a huge improvement from their performance in the last cycle which was very poor. Despite missing players like Brook and not using others like Karun Nair who has been in good form they are still winning games. Their bowling attack is sharp and once T Natarajan is fully fit it will be even sharper. That says volumes about the team balance and astute choices taken so far.
Rahul has never won an IPL title and Delhi has never lifted the trophy either. Both player and team have something to prove and they could be the perfect combination to make it happen together this year. With Rahul's experience and astute batting and with the team looking strong at the beginning 2025 could be their year at last. If they just keep playing like a team and implement the correct changes whenever required they might reach the ultimate level. At present Rahul's coming back into form and versatility is one of the largest positives of this IPL season.
