Liam Livingstone Shines with Maiden ODI Century in England's Win Over West Indies
West Indies, fast bowler Matthew Forde was the standout performer with figures of 3-48, though off-spinner Gudakesh Motie endured a tough day, conceding 71 runs in nine wicketless overs.
Captain Liam Livingstone led England to a thrilling five-wicket victory over the West Indies on Saturday with his first one-day international (ODI) century. Livingstone’s explosive knock overshadowed a fine century by West Indies skipper Shai Hope. England chased down a formidable target of 329 with 15 balls to spare, thanks to Livingstone’s 124* off 77 balls, which included four fours and nine sixes.
In pursuit of 329, England were initially at 160-4, but Livingstone found strong support from Sam Curran. The pair added a crucial 140 runs for the fifth wicket, with Curran scoring a brisk 52 from 52 balls. Earlier in the innings, opener Phil Salt (59) and Jacob Bethell (55) had also made valuable contributions, helping to set a solid foundation.
Reflecting on his performance, Livingstone noted, “At the end of the summer I felt I was getting back to my best, maturing a little and knowing my game. I'm enjoying my cricket and if I'm enjoying my cricket, I usually play well." He commended Curran’s efforts, saying, “Sammy played beautifully.” Livingstone also acknowledged the need for improvement in fielding, calling the team’s performance "sloppy," though he praised the bowlers for regularly taking wickets.

Shai Hope anchored the West Indies’ innings with a commanding 117, marking his 17th ODI century. Hope's innings, featuring eight fours and four sixes, came as a recovery after the West Indies lost openers Brandon King and Evin Lewis with just 12 runs on the board. Keacy Carty’s 71 and Sherfane Rutherford’s brisk 54 off 36 balls provided additional firepower, lifting the team to a competitive total.
However, Hope expressed frustration over the result, describing his century as "irrelevant if it doesn't contribute to wins." He emphasized the need for discipline and effective execution of plans in order to secure victories.
With the three-match series tied at 1-1, both teams now look ahead to the series decider in Barbados on Wednesday. Livingstone voiced optimism, saying, “Back in the series, looking forward to Barbados, we will rest up and try to win the series.” The two teams are also set to play a five-match Twenty20 International series following the ODIs.
