MCG to Host Historic Day-Night Test to Celebrate 150 Years of Test Cricket
The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host a milestone day-night Test to mark 150 years of Test cricket. The milestone event will honor the rich heritage of the game, providing spectators with an exciting experience under the lights.

A unique England-Australia Test match has been announced by Cricket Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in March 2027. The Test will be a day-night Test played using a pink ball to celebrate the 150th anniversary of men's Test cricket. The traditional March 11 to March 15 fixture will be the first-ever men's day-night Test on the legendary ground. It is one of the aspects of Cricket Australia's move to wed tradition and technology and take the tournament to more viewers. A Blast from the Past with a Turn
The MCG is an iconic ground in the game's history.
It hosted the inaugural Test match in 1877 when Australia hosted England in a daytime red-ball Test.
A full 100 years later, the ground also staged the Centenary Test in 1977 in a celebration of the game's heritage with a traditional red-ball match. The 150th anniversary Test will be different in that it will be staged at night under the lights. It is in line with evolving demand for Test cricket, which becomes more viable worldwide because the evening sessions allow more fans time to watch after work. The day-night Test cricket idea has been a hit since its inception, and the MCG already hosted this version in the women's Ashes Test this year. The same was a day-night game, and it was proof of the success of the pink-ball format, which is now set to be launched in the men's next match. A Landmark Occasion for Test Cricket
Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg has signified the significance of the game by referring to it as a fitting tribute to the history and development of the game. "Playing under lights will not only be a tribute to the game's heritage, but also signify its evolution," Greenberg claims. He never had any doubts this historic Test would make impressions etched forever, such as that of the Centenary Test itself in 1977.
The Centenary Test provided us with an abundance of moments that will never be forgotten—David Hookes hitting five consecutive boundaries from Tony Greig, Rick McCosker battling on with a broken jaw, and Derek Randall's dogged century," Greenberg said. "The 150th anniversary Test will certainly add to this heritage, with new memories to be etched forever.".
Greenberg also mentioned the Victorian Government and Melbourne Cricket Club's keen backing to hosting this game. Such backing guarantees the MCG's continued position as the center of cricket's most significant events.
Crammed Test Cricket Calendar in 2027
This headline fixture, though not within the jurisdiction of the World Test Championship (WTC), is a hotly contested encounter.
Australia's 2027 cricket schedule is packed to capacity with a record 12 Tests.
Apart from the celebratory Test at the MCG, the team will play three Tests against Sri Lanka, three Tests against New Zealand at home, and a five-match series against India. Australia will also tour England for the Ashes before featuring in the ODI World Cup in South Africa. With all this to occur in the next year, Australian cricket fans have much to look forward to. The 150th anniversary Test will be one of the main attractions, commemorating the spirit of the game and its ever-evolving landscape. As the game continues to evolve, this match will serve as a bridge between the past, present, and future of the game.
