Mehidy Hasan Remains Optimistic After Opening ODI Loss to Afghanistan

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan has remained positive despite his team’s heavy loss to Afghanistan in the first ODI of their three-match series. Bangladesh's batting collapse led to the defeat, but Mehidy believes there is still hope for his side. He pointed out that this single loss does not define their chances in the series, highlighting their previous successes against Afghanistan.

"We've beaten Afghanistan many times before. We even won against them in the first ODI match in the World Cup, then won the T20 series at home, and we have won series on home soil before. Just because we lost one match doesn't mean everything is lost," Mehidy said during a media interaction in the UAE.

Mehidy acknowledged that the loss was disappointing but urged the team to move on from it. "In international cricket, every team is of high quality. You can never underestimate any team. So we're trying to move past the poor performance in this one match," he added.

The all-rounder also reflected on the conditions during the match, noting that the pitch became more challenging as it aged. "When Shanto and I were batting, the pitch seemed easy for us. But after 20 overs, as the ball softened and aged, it suddenly started turning a bit more. You could see that we were struggling, even as set batters. One of us should have seen it through to the end," he explained.

Mehidy also discussed the team's strategy for the upcoming matches, emphasizing the importance of the next ODI. "We still have a chance. We lost one match, but there are still two left. The next one is crucial for us," he said, acknowledging the team's adjustment to playing ODIs after a break of several months.

Additionally, Mehidy expressed confidence in the young Jaker Ali, who is set to replace the injured Mushfiqur Rahim in the squad. "Mushfiqur Bhai's injury is definitely unfortunate. We all know how valuable he is for the team. But Jaker Ali has a good opportunity now. If he gives his best, it'll be great for his career and for the country," Mehidy added, offering his support for the upcoming player.

With Litton Das also unavailable due to illness, Jaker Ali’s inclusion provides an opportunity to cement his place in the 50-over format, and Mehidy hopes he can make the most of it.
