Mohammad Kaif Urges Kohli, Rohit to Prioritize Domestic Cricket Over VIP Comforts

In the aftermath of India's historic 0-3 Test series defeat at home to New Zealand, criticism of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma continues to grow. Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has added his voice to the calls for change, suggesting that India's top stars need to step away from the comforts of "big cars" and "VIP treatment" and return to the grind of domestic cricket to regain form.

Mohammad Kaif Urges Kohli, Rohit to Prioritize Domestic Cricket Over VIP Comforts

Kaif's Recommendation

Kaif emphasized the importance of domestic cricket, urging senior players to participate in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy instead of solely focusing on international fixtures.

"They need form, and they need to bat hours there. Scoring a hundred in the Ranji Trophy can boost their morale immensely," Kaif stated in a social media video.

With the Indian contingent not departing for Australia until later in the week, Kaif believes that Kohli, Rohit, and other struggling players have ample opportunity to play domestic matches.

Learning from Rishabh Pant's Example

Kaif highlighted Rishabh Pant's heroics during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy as a prime example of how domestic and preparatory matches can help players rediscover their rhythm.

"Pant wasn't part of the ODI or T20I squads for that tour, but he played a practice match and scored a century. That performance helped him secure his place in the Test XI, leading to his game-changing knock at Gabba," Kaif recalled.

Addressing the "VIP Culture"

Kaif also criticized the perceived complacency among senior players, urging them to focus on domestic cricket and put in the necessary effort to regain their form.

"Forget that you travel in big cars and flights or that you may not get VIP treatment in domestic cricket. If you want to find form, you need to put in the effort," Kaif asserted.

Domestic Opportunities Await

Kaif pointed out that upcoming Ranji Trophy matches present the perfect opportunity for senior players to hone their skills. Delhi is scheduled to face Chandigarh in an away game, while Mumbai will host Odisha. Participating in these matches could allow struggling players to get valuable game time and build confidence ahead of international fixtures.

A Wake-Up Call for Indian Cricket

Kaif's remarks underline a growing consensus that India's senior players need to revisit domestic cricket as a foundation for success in the longer format. With India's road to the World Test Championship final hanging in the balance, the emphasis is now on preparation, accountability, and a willingness to embrace the grind of domestic cricket.
