Mohammad Rizwan Reluctantly Accepts Pakistan's White-Ball Captaincy with Limited Selection Power
According to PTI, Rizwan initially resisted the new selection system but ultimately agreed after discussions with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and senior selector Aaqib Javed. Under this policy, Rizwan’s input will be advisory only, meaning he won’t have voting rights in finalizing the playing XI or touring squads.
In a recent shift in Pakistan cricket, Mohammad Rizwan has taken over from Babar Azam as the white-ball captain, despite reports indicating initial reluctance to accept the role. Rizwan's new leadership role coincides with a change in Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) selection policy, which places full control of team selection with the selectors rather than the captain.
This arrangement led to the resignation of white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, who preferred a more involved role in the selection process. Now, Test coach Jason Gillespie will lead the team for the upcoming series in Australia.
Since Pakistan's recent loss in the Test series against England, the PCB has aimed to enhance accountability by assigning selectors, including Azhar Ali, Aaqib Javed, and Aleem Dar, to handle team selection independently. This move reflects an intent to streamline decision-making without direct influence from the captain or head coach.
Expressing his vision after assuming captaincy, Rizwan stated his commitment to fostering unity and team spirit, echoing the positive atmosphere Pakistan had a few years ago. He remains optimistic about his team, hoping they will rebuild momentum and perform strongly during the Australia series. Pakistan’s next white-ball series will see them face Australia in three ODIs and three T20Is.
