First-Half Drama
The match started slowly, with few chances until the late stages of the first half. Morton broke the deadlock when Iain Wilson capitalized on Kirk Broadfoot's knockdown from a long free-kick. The set-piece decision infuriated Ayr manager Scott Brown, who was booked after protesting the referee’s call.
Brown had already expressed frustration earlier when a rough challenge by Morgan Boyes on Nick McAllister resulted in only a yellow card.
Second-Half Equalizer
Ayr struck back early in the second half through George Oakley. The former Morton striker deftly turned in Jay Henderson's whipped free-kick, much to the dismay of the home crowd, who had been vocal in taunting their ex-player.
Despite some late attempts, Morton struggled to threaten Ayr's goal, with Filip Stuparevic’s tame header being their best effort. Meanwhile, Ayr came closest to snatching a winner, as Alfie Bavidge had two attempts blocked, and George Stanger narrowly missed with a kneeed effort.
Post-Match Reactions
-
Iain Wilson (Morton):
"It was a bit of a scrappy game, but we can take positives from getting a point at least. Scoring has been our major problem, but we’ve been creating chances. If we keep doing that, the goals will come." -
George Oakley (Ayr United):
"I knew I was going to get a bit of stick, first time back here, but you just have to deal with it. We know we have more to give, but this is a hard place to come. We were much better in the second half and probably looked like the team most likely to win the game, but we'll take a point and get back up the road."
Looking Ahead
Both teams will feel there’s room for improvement, with Morton seeking to convert more chances into goals and Ayr aiming to capitalize on their strong second-half performances.
