Mumbai Indians Suffer First IPL 2025 Test Without Jasprit Bumrah
Mumbai Indians have their first major test in IPL 2025 without Jasprit Bumrah, evaluating their bowling depth and team strength in his absence. Can MI get by without their speed mainstay?

Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to begin the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign, and they are confronted with an early test—the absence of their top fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, for the first few games. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene also discussed the issue in a recent media interaction in Mumbai, owning up that the unavailability of Bumrah will be an uphill task for the team. But he sounded optimistic, remarking that it is an opportunity for other bowlers to shoulder the responsibility and prove their strength.
Bumrah's Unavailability and Healing Timeline
Bumrah, a key pillar of MI’s bowling attack since his debut in 2013, has played 133 matches for the franchise and claimed 165 wickets. His ability to deliver under pressure, especially in the death overs, has made him one of the best bowlers in the world. However, his recurring back injury, which first kept him out of IPL 2023, has once again sidelined him for the beginning of the 2025 season.
Rehabilitating currently at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, Bumrah is making incremental steps. His recovery, according to Jayawardene, is monitored day by day. The BCCI medical team has not provided an end date for his comeback, though there have been reports suggesting that he should come back to MI during the first week of April.
Strategic Adjustments for MI
With Bumrah unavailable, MI’s bowling unit will need to reshuffle its strategy. The franchise has several pace options, including Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Reece Topley, and Corbin Bosch, who was brought in as a replacement for Lizaad Williams. However, none of these bowlers match Bumrah’s expertise in the death overs. Boult and Chahar are primarily powerplay specialists, leaving a gap in the crucial final overs of the game.
In addition to their overseas fast bowlers, MI also has domestic pace options, including Ashwani Kumar, Satyanarayana Raju, Arjun Tendulkar, and Raj Angad Bawa. The team’s captain, Hardik Pandya, an allrounder, will likely have to take on extra responsibility with the ball, ensuring balance in the squad until Bumrah returns.
Impact on MI’s Initial Matches
MI’s IPL 2025 campaign begins with two away matches—against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23 in Chennai, followed by a clash with Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29. Their first home game is scheduled for March 31 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium.
The first half of the season will be crucial to MI, where a good start would decide how the tournament unravels. With matches fixed against top sides like Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in April, MI would need to plot something to fill Bumrah's void and maintain a competitiveness edge.
Impact of Bumrah's National Duty and History of Injury
Bumrah's recurring injury problems date back to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this year, when he suffered a stress-related back strain during the last Test against Australia in Sydney on January 4. The injury meant that he was excluded from the Champions Trophy, which India recently won.
This is the first time since his back surgery in March 2023 that Bumrah has faced a setback. Initially, India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had included him in the provisional Champions Trophy squad, but after fresh scans in February, Bumrah continued to feel discomfort, ruling him out of the tournament.
Despite the issues created by the absence of Bumrah, Jayawardene is hopeful. He believes this is an opportunity for other players to rise to the occasion. "We'll have to wait or look for a chance for someone else to emerge. That's my view. It gives us a bit of experimenting with a few things and see how it goes. The beginning of the season provides us with the scope to do that," he added.
The MI squad has a history of coming back, typically managing to overcome adversity. With a mix of experienced internationals and young prospects, the franchise will look to navigate this difficult period and make sure that they are still in good contention for the IPL title.
While IPL 2025 commences, all would be waiting with their breaths caught to witness how MI fares without their best pacer and if Bumrah returns in time to make an impact near the latter half of the competition.
