Najmul Tight-Lipped on Captaincy Issue Ahead of Second Test Against South Africa
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appears keen on convincing Najmul to remain in his position. If they are unsuccessful, the board would still like him to lead the One Day International (ODI) team until the 2025 Champions Trophy.
As Bangladesh prepares for the second Test against South Africa, skipper Najmul Hossain finds himself at the center of speculation regarding his future in the captaincy role. Recent reports suggest that Najmul is considering stepping down, but he has chosen to remain tight-lipped on the matter.
In a surprising turn of events, Najmul skipped the usual pre-series press conference, a platform where he typically shares his insights. This absence raised eyebrows, especially given the swirling rumors about his captaincy. On Thursday, he refrained from addressing questions about his potential resignation, aiming to avoid further controversy.
BCB President Faruque Ahmed, who arrived in Chattogram on October 30 for a personal discussion with Najmul, has not yet had the chance to meet with the team's captain. In light of this, Najmul indicated that clarity on his captaincy status would emerge after an upcoming discussion, which is expected to happen soon.

Najmul commented on the ongoing situation, saying, “The president has spoken to you all regarding the captaincy. I won't comment further on this matter here. You'll likely get an update directly from the cricket board." He also added, "I haven't spoken to the president yet. Once we do, either I or the president will be able to give a clear message."
Despite the uncertainty, Najmul expressed that he does not view the captaincy as a burden. "I've always said this, even back in age-level cricket, that I really enjoy this role. In the last few series, I've truly enjoyed captaining on the field," he noted. He emphasized that the pressures of captaincy do not interfere with his batting, stating, "I just focus on watching the ball and batting."
However, he admitted the importance of improving his performance as a top-order batter. "As a batter higher up the order, my role in scoring runs is critical. Lately, I feel I haven't fulfilled this. In my recent innings, I've often been getting out between 20 and 40 runs, which is damaging for the team. I need to concentrate more in this area," he acknowledged.
In light of the team’s heavy defeats in the Tests against South Africa, Najmul was asked if external pressures were influencing their performance. He acknowledged that outside noise might have an effect but emphasized that it shouldn’t be an excuse for poor performances. “It's possible that outside noise affects the team. But that doesn't justify playing so poorly that we're all out for 100-150 runs. It’s better if the noise doesn't interfere. As I've said before, the less noise, the better,” he concluded.
As the team looks ahead to the second Test, Najmul's future as captain remains uncertain, and fans are eager for clarity on the situation.
