Queensland Cricket and Brisbane Lions Push for Gabba’s Future Amid Olympic Venue Uncertainty

With the recent change in Queensland’s government, Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Lions are urging Premier David Crisafulli to reconsider his opposition to building a new stadium for the 2032 Olympics. In a letter to the Premier, both sporting bodies pressed for a renewed discussion on a proposed AU$3.4 billion stadium in Victoria Park, envisioning it as a central venue for the Games and a replacement for the ageing Gabba.

Premier Crisafulli has scrapped the previous government’s plans for a revamped Olympic venue and initiated a 100-day review to re-evaluate the 2032 blueprint. However, he remains firm against constructing a new Olympic stadium. This stance has prompted concerns among Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Lions, who feel a long-term solution for the Gabba is vital for the future of cricket and AFL in the state.

Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson voiced the organizations' frustration, noting they have waited 18 months for clarity on the Gabba’s fate. Originally, the Gabba was slated for a AU$2.7 billion overhaul by the Labor government, which was later scaled down to a AU$600 million renovation amid rising costs. Now, with those plans back to square one, the uncertainty places the Gabba’s ability to host international cricket and AFL matches at risk.

The sporting bodies have pushed for a quick decision on the Gabba’s future, emphasizing the financial strain that potential displacement would cause. Queensland Cricket could face costs upwards of AU$40 million if a new home venue is required during construction or relocation.

The Deputy Premier, Jarrod Bleijie, expressed openness to reviewing the letter but supported the 100-day review and the “no new stadium” policy, leaving the future of the Gabba—and the question of where Queensland’s cricket and AFL teams will play—in uncertain territory.
