RCB Star Rajat Patidar Hits 68-Ball Century in Ranji Trophy, Sends Strong Retention Message
RCB navigates its retention strategy, they have already confirmed the retention of star batter and former captain Virat Kohli. However, the futures of other key players, including current captain Faf du Plessis, remain uncertain as the team finalizes its roster ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
Rajat Patidar has made headlines with a stunning unbeaten century off just 68 balls in the Ranji Trophy match against Haryana, played in Indore. His explosive innings was crucial in leading Madhya Pradesh's fightback after they trailed by 132 runs following Haryana's first innings. With the IPL retention deadline looming on October 31, Patidar's performance sends a resounding message to his franchise, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), about his readiness for the upcoming season.
As RCB navigates its retention strategy, they have already confirmed the retention of star batter and former captain Virat Kohli. However, the futures of other key players, including current captain Faf du Plessis, remain uncertain as the team finalizes its roster ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
Under the new rules set by the IPL governing council, each franchise is allowed to retain a maximum of six players, combining direct retentions and the right-to-match (RTM) option. This can include up to five capped players—both Indian and overseas—and a maximum of two uncapped Indian players. A notable aspect of this retention policy is that any player making their international debut before October 31 will be classified as capped, even if retained as an uncapped player.
The retention strategy becomes even more critical with the IPL auction purse increased by INR 20 crore, bringing each team's budget to INR 120 crore (approximately USD 14.3 million). Uncapped players retained will cost teams INR 4 crore, and the IPL has reintroduced a rule allowing Indian players who retired from international cricket at least five years prior to the season to enter the auction as uncapped players.
With the retention deadline fast approaching, Patidar's dazzling century not only showcases his batting prowess but also emphasizes his intent to be a pivotal part of RCB’s lineup moving forward. His performance in the Ranji Trophy could play a significant role in shaping RCB’s decisions as they look to build a competitive team for the next IPL season.
