Ricky Ponting Explains Reason Why CSK Decided To Retain MS Dhoni In IPL 2025
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting reflected on Dhoni’s extraordinary longevity and continued impact on the game. He acknowledged that although Dhoni had his worst season two years ago, he made a strong comeback last year, proving that he still has the ability to significantly affect games.
Australia cricket legend Ricky Ponting recently opened up about MS Dhoni's invaluable contribution to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), explaining why the franchise decided to retain him for IPL 2025 despite his recent injuries. Ponting, a two-time World Cup-winning captain himself, praised Dhoni's remarkable ability to balance his roles as both player and mentor, underscoring how crucial his leadership is, even when he's not captaining or actively playing on the field.
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting reflected on Dhoni’s extraordinary longevity and continued impact on the game. He acknowledged that although Dhoni had his worst season two years ago, he made a strong comeback last year, proving that he still has the ability to significantly affect games. "Two seasons ago he probably had his worst season, but then last year again, he bounced back into really impacting some games like the MS Dhoni of old," Ponting said.
Ponting also mentioned that CSK might manage Dhoni's workload in IPL 2025, possibly giving him rest during certain matches to keep him fresh for crucial games. He noted that even though Dhoni may not be available for every match, his leadership off the field remains invaluable. "Any team that he's in, whether he's captain or not, he's always going to be a mentor and a leader around that group, whether he's playing, whether he's sitting on the sidelines," said Ponting.
Despite injuries, Ponting emphasized that Dhoni’s influence on CSK is irreplaceable. He continues to offer a wealth of experience and guidance to the younger players, which is crucial for the team’s success. Ponting highlighted Dhoni’s evolving role within the team, pointing out that he now bats later in the innings but still has the ability to make a substantial impact. "He's actually batting the last 20 balls of an innings now but still showing that you can make a big impact on the game by doing that," Ponting added.
Ponting also acknowledged the unique quality of players like Dhoni, who are able to maintain high performance levels over extended careers. He said, "The best players are the ones that are able to maintain such a high level for a long time...for 10, 12, 14-year careers."
Dhoni's continued involvement with CSK, both as a player and a mentor, remains essential to the franchise, and Ponting's comments underline the lasting value of his leadership and experience.
