Ricky Ponting Highlights Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer in Punjab Kings’ Strategic Plans
Ponting also commented on the unexpected release of prominent players, including Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul. “I was a bit surprised by some of the non-Indian retentions, with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant up for auction, even KL Rahul to some extent. It seems certain franchises are aiming for a change in direction,” he remarked.
In a recent interview, newly appointed Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting emphasized the franchise's plans for player retention and their approach to the IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled for later this year. Following the retention list announcement on October 31, Punjab made the bold decision to keep only two uncapped players, Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh, setting the stage for a strategic overhaul of their squad.
Ponting, who has previously coached stars like Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer at Delhi Capitals, expressed enthusiasm about building a new team dynamic. “I’m most excited about a fresh start. It begins with today’s retention list. Our strategy is clear; we’re entering the auction with just two uncapped players and the largest purse by far, allowing us the flexibility to construct an entire squad,” he explained during his chat with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.
With a significant number of high-profile players—including Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran, and Arshdeep Singh—released by Punjab, Ponting aims to lead the team in a new direction. He noted the importance of adopting a distinct brand of cricket to enhance the franchise's performance, particularly as they haven’t made the IPL playoffs since 2014. “For me, the priority is to transform this franchise. I want it to be different, with visible changes in results. I want us to be the most dynamic and entertaining team in the IPL,” he stated.
Concluding his insights, Ponting stressed the significance of having a well-defined auction strategy. “You need to pinpoint your primary target and decide how much you’re willing to spend. Getting the auction strategy right is crucial, and then we, as the coaching team, can take it forward,” he said.
As Punjab Kings prepare for the auction, Ponting’s vision and strategic planning will play a pivotal role in reshaping the team’s future and striving for success in the upcoming IPL season.
