Ricky Ponting Praises MS Dhoni’s Retention by CSK: A Key Reason Behind the Decision
At 43, Dhoni's ability to maintain a high level of performance over such a long period impressed Ponting. He praised the veteran's longevity, saying, "The best players are the ones that maintain such a high level for a long time, for 10, 12, or even 14 years."
MS Dhoni's retention by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2024 IPL auction has drawn praise from former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting. Despite CSK finishing outside the playoff positions in IPL 2024, the franchise decided to retain Dhoni under the uncapped player category, as he hasn’t featured in an international starting XI for the past five years. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter has been retained for ₹4 crore, a decision that highlights his continued value to the team.
Ponting, speaking on The ICC Review, analyzed CSK's decision, noting that Dhoni's form fluctuated in recent seasons but he has shown signs of bouncing back. "Two seasons ago, he probably had his worst season, but last year he bounced back and impacted games like the MS Dhoni of old," said Ponting. He added that CSK might give Dhoni occasional rest to ensure he stays at his best throughout the season.
Ponting also emphasized Dhoni's invaluable leadership qualities, which remain crucial to CSK regardless of whether he captains. "Whether he's captain or not, he's always going to be a mentor and leader," Ponting stated, underlining Dhoni’s role both on and off the field.

Ponting further noted Dhoni’s ability to make a significant impact, even in the latter stages of an innings. "He bats the last 20 balls now but still shows that he can make a big impact," he said, recognizing Dhoni's continued ability to turn games in CSK’s favor.
In addition to Dhoni, CSK retained key players including captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (₹18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (₹13 crore), Shivam Dube (₹12 crore), and Ravindra Jadeja (₹18 crore). The IPL franchises were allowed to retain up to six players, including a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players, either through retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option.
