Ruben Amorim Opens Up About His Move to Manchester United and the Request That Was Rejected
In an interview, Amorim revealed that he initially wanted to remain at Sporting CP until the end of the season. Despite strong interest from Manchester United, he hoped to finish what he had started at Sporting.
Ruben Amorim is set to take charge of Manchester United after the sacking of Erik ten Hag, marking the beginning of a new era at Old Trafford. The 39-year-old comes with a stellar reputation, having led Sporting CP to two league titles, and is seen as one of the brightest young managers in European football. However, before accepting the role, Amorim had one major request that was ultimately turned down.
The 'Now or Never' Decision
In an interview, Amorim revealed that he initially wanted to remain at Sporting CP until the end of the season. Despite strong interest from Manchester United, he hoped to finish what he had started at Sporting. He explained, “The season started, we started very well, and then Manchester United came, they paid above the compensation clause, and the president defended the club's interests. I never discussed anything with the president. For three days, I said I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible. It was now or never, or Manchester would go for another option.” This left him with just three days to make a life-altering decision, one that would change his career trajectory significantly.
Plans to Bring Coaching Staff
Amorim also shared his intentions to bring his coaching staff with him to Manchester United, which could impact current interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy. Van Nistelrooy has made his desire to stay at Old Trafford clear, but it remains uncertain whether Amorim will offer him a position in his new setup.
Amorim's Upcoming Responsibilities
Before assuming his role at Manchester United, Amorim will oversee two more games for Sporting: a Champions League clash against Manchester City and a league fixture against Braga. His first match in charge of United will be against Ipswich Town on November 24, marking the beginning of his journey at one of the world’s most iconic football clubs.
Amorim’s arrival represents a fresh start for Manchester United, with the young coach tasked with turning around the team’s fortunes and guiding them back to major success.
