Ruturaj Gaikwad to Captain India A on Australia Tour
Ruturaj Gaikwad comes into the tour with significant leadership experience, having captained India C in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, where his team finished second in the four-team tournament.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named captain of the India A squad for two first-class matches against Australia A, set to be played in Mackay and Melbourne. The tour will conclude with a three-day intra-squad match against the senior Indian men's team at the WACA in Perth. Abhimanyu Easwaran has been appointed as vice-captain for the series.
India A Squad for Australia Tour
The 15-member India A squad is as follows: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Abhimanyu Easwaran (VC), Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Devdutt Padikkal, Ricky Bhui, Baba Indrajith, Ishan Kishan (WK), Abishek Porel (WK), Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Dayal, Navdeep Saini, Manav Suthar, and Tanush Kotian.
Gaikwad and Easwaran’s Leadership Roles
Ruturaj Gaikwad comes into the tour with significant leadership experience, having captained India C in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy, where his team finished second in the four-team tournament. He has also been in good form in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 231 runs in two matches, including a century (145) against Mumbai. As a top-order batter, Gaikwad's consistency and leadership make him a key figure for India A on this tour.
Abhimanyu Easwaran, the vice-captain, also had an impressive Duleep Trophy campaign, leading India B to a third-place finish and scoring a couple of centuries along the way. Both Gaikwad and Easwaran are strong candidates for a backup opening spot in the senior Indian team, should the need arise during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a high-profile Test series against Australia.
Key Players in the Squad
The squad features several players who have performed consistently in the domestic circuit. Among the notable selections is Andhra's Ricky Bhui, who was the top run-scorer in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy and the 2024 Duleep Trophy. Bhui's inclusion rewards his stellar performances and gives him an opportunity to prove himself at the next level.
Tamil Nadu's Baba Indrajith, who tallied 767 runs in the previous Ranji Trophy season, is another significant inclusion. His experience and ability to play long innings in the middle-order will be crucial for India A as they take on strong opposition in Australia.
Devdutt Padikkal, known for his aggressive stroke play, also joins the squad as a middle-order option. The left-hander will be looking to make a mark and push for a spot in India's senior team, given his potential in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.
Wicket-keeping Options: Ishan Kishan and Abishek Porel
Ishan Kishan and Abishek Porel have been selected as the two wicket-keeping options. Kishan, who has experience at the highest level with India’s limited-overs teams, brings an aggressive batting style and proven skills behind the stumps. On the other hand, Porel, a promising young keeper, will be keen to make an impression and showcase his abilities in unfamiliar Australian conditions.
Pace Attack Led by Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, and Navdeep Saini
The pace bowling department will be spearheaded by Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Dayal, and Navdeep Saini. This quartet brings a mix of pace, bounce, and swing to the table. Navdeep Saini, who has previously played for India, will be looking to make a case for his return to the senior squad, while Mukesh Kumar continues to impress with his steady rise in the domestic circuit.
Yash Dayal, known for his ability to generate extra bounce, will be another key player to watch out for, especially in Australian conditions where the pitches are conducive to fast bowling. Khaleel Ahmed, a left-arm pacer, adds variety to the attack and will be expected to use his skills to trouble Australia A’s batters.
Spin Options: Manav Suthar and Tanush Kotian
In the spin department, Manav Suthar and Tanush Kotian have been included. Kotian, a Mumbai off-spinner, earned his spot after impressive performances in the Duleep Trophy. With spin playing a pivotal role in the subcontinent but less so in Australia, Kotian and Suthar will have the opportunity to test their skills in more pace-friendly conditions.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Earns Call-Up After Debut
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who recently made his debut for India in Gwalior, also finds a place in the squad. The all-rounder has been a rising star in Indian domestic cricket, and this selection provides him with another platform to hone his skills and potentially make a mark on the international stage.
Preparation for the Senior Team
Both Gaikwad and Easwaran, along with other key players like Sai Sudharsan, are being considered as potential backup openers for the senior India squad in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will run parallel to the India A tour. This makes the Australia A series a crucial opportunity for them to showcase their talent and preparedness for possible Test call-ups.
The intra-squad match in Perth will also be of significant importance as India A players get a chance to compete against the senior Indian team, giving selectors a closer look at who could be in line for future international roles.
India A’s tour of Australia presents a fantastic opportunity for young and experienced domestic players to prove their mettle in challenging conditions. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team will look to gain valuable experience and build momentum with an eye on future Test and ODI opportunities.
The two first-class games against Australia A and the intra-squad match against the senior India men's team will also act as a platform for the players to impress selectors ahead of India’s packed international calendar. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy looming, performances on this tour could have far-reaching consequences for several players aiming to break into the senior side.
