Sam Curran Aims to Shine for CSK with England Return in Sight in IPL 2025
Sam Curran is all ready to make a massive contribution to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, with his return to England just around the corner. Will he be able to provide match-winning performances and further enhance his international comeback?

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 approaches, English all-rounder Sam Curran has set his sights on making a strong impression with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His ultimate goal? A return to international cricket with England. The talented cricketer, who has not played for England since the white-ball series against the West Indies in November last year, is eager to prove himself and earn his place back in the national squad.
Curran's Non-Inclusion in England Squad and Champions Trophy Omission
Despite being an integral part of England's recent victories, Curran was surprisingly omitted from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 team. England's performance in this competition proved to be disastrous, with them losing all their matches in Pakistan, culminating in the resignation of captain Jos Buttler. With a leadership change looming and fresh opportunities on the horizon, Curran is keen to utilize the IPL as a platform to demonstrate his skills and grab the attention of England's selectors.
A Proven Match-Winner in White-Ball Cricket
Though largely considered a T20 specialist, Curran's international exposure goes beyond the shortest format. He has represented England in 24 Test matches and 35 One Day Internationals (ODIs) since his 2018 debut. His most memorable performance was during the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, when he was declared Player of the Tournament after helping England to championship success.
With England up against the West Indies, India, and South Africa in a hectic home summer, Curran believes that the tournament provides the perfect chance for him to stamp his authority again on the international scene. He is, though, more immediate concerned with what he can deliver for CSK in the IPL, where under the tutelage of New Zealand great and the head coach there, Stephen Fleming, he shall play.
Discussing on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Curran explained how he is keen on making the most out of his IPL experience. He reiterated that his focus lies in getting back into the England white-ball side.
"My primary goal is most likely just to get back into the England white-ball team. I don't think I've ever really had a clear role in the team. During the Champions Trophy and the India series at the beginning of the year, the team had a very batting-focused style, which meant my opportunities were restricted. If I can have a clear role, I think I can work my way back into the team," Curran said.
The 26-year-old admitted that his inclusion would be subject to his performances. "The answer is plain and simple: runs and wickets. If I can do the job with both bat and ball, then I'll be in a good position. I was frustrated when I got axed, but I've learned to deal with disappointments better. I feel more mature now, and hopefully my performances in the IPL will see me get back into the England setup around the summer."
Curran's horizons reach far beyond simply getting back into the national team. This summer, he will captain Surrey in England's domestic Vitality Blast competition, an exposure that will further validate his leadership. Since England is likely to have different captains for their ODI and T20I teams, Curran's name may come into consideration for the captaincy of the T20I team.
England's new head coach, Brendon McCullum, has suggested the same in his statement, "If it's the same captain for both formats, great. If not, that's fine too. I need a couple of weeks to assess and get things back on track."
Having never played under McCullum, Curran is positive about being able to show himself under the Kiwi's captaincy. "Baz (McCullum) was blunt with me when I got omitted. He laid out the balance of the team and how things might have gone differently. I appreciate that level of honesty. He didn't close the door on me, and that is inspiring. Now, it is up to me to play and prove that I am worthy of a spot in the England team once more," Curran revealed.
A Determined Comeback in the Making
The coming months are decisive for Sam Curran. If he can impress in the IPL, it will bolster his argument for a return to the national team. He is eager to show his value, not only as a cricketer but also as a leader, in franchise cricket with CSK and at home with Surrey.
Although the journey back to the England team will not be simple, Curran is ready to battle for his place. With England changing and fresh chances ahead, an exceptional IPL campaign could be the ideal springboard for his return. Supporters and selectors alike will be observing keenly as the young all-rounder takes on this important part of his career.
