Sanju Samson Speaks About Injury After Retirement Hurt vs DC
Sanju Samson talks about his rib injury after getting hurt while retiring during the IPL 2025 game against Delhi Capitals, citing the effect on Rajasthan Royals' pursuit.

It was a thriller between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Arun Jaitley Stadium as the RR skipper Sanju Samson was asked to retire hurt because of a rib cage injury but reported his fitness moments later. Samson had been in fantastic nick, making a quick 31 runs from 19 deliveries with three sixes and two fours. But during the course of playing the sixth over of the match from DC's Vipraj Nigam, RR captain experienced a severe stinging pain in his ribs and was forced to leave the field. In spite of the injury, he was hopeful about his recovery and stated, "It feels alright now. I wasn't ready to come back and bat but we will observe it tomorrow and see how it is."
Samson's injury occurred at a turning point of the game when Rajasthan Royals were chasing a modest score. With nine runs required from the final over, the game was in a delicate position, and the game was taken to a Super Over as Mitchell Starc played a classy innings under pressure. Starc, who bowled the final over, only gave away eight runs, taking the game to the Super Over. Starc’s bowling was exceptional, and Samson acknowledged his performance, praising him as "one of the best guys around in the world." Despite the loss, Samson recognized that Starc had played a key role in Delhi’s win.
In the Super Over, Rajasthan Royals set a target of 12 runs for DC. It in spite of the hard work of RR's pacer Sandeep Sharma, who bowled the Super Over, Delhi achieved the target with ease within four deliveries, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs completing the chase with finesse. In spite of the agonizing defeat, Samson was impressed with the overall performance of his team, particularly the bowlers and the fielders. "The energy on the ground was fantastic," he said. "We bowled in the right areas, and sometimes they attacked hard at us. Our fielders and bowlers played their best."
Samson also revealed that he believed the chaseable target that was given to them by DC was plausible considering Rajasthan's solid batting line-up. "The beginning of the Powerplay we received was good, and I felt that score was chaseable," he said. Even though they lost narrowly, the RR skipper was optimistic and said that if they had won, confidence would have seeped in into the dressing room and the team's morale would have gained a boost.
Briefly, Rajasthan Royals might not have been able to seal the win, but Samson's leadership and praise for his teammates reflected well on his attitude. He also credited Sandeep Sharma with being a good supportive contribution, especially during challenging overs, though he conceded that Starc's genius eventually won the game for Delhi. Samson's injury update reported that the problem was minor, and he was hoping to get back into action shortly.
