Setback for Mohammed Shami as Gujarat Titans Plan Retentions Without Him for Upcoming IPL Season
Sai Sudharsan had a breakout year, scoring 527 runs in 12 matches, including a century, securing his retention spot. Shahrukh Khan, with a strike rate of 169.33, and IPL veteran Tewatia, known for his powerful hitting, are also likely to be retained.
As the IPL mega auction approaches, Gujarat Titans appear set to retain several key players, but star pacer Mohammed Shami's name is noticeably absent from the list. Reports suggest that the franchise will secure Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, and Sai Sudharsan, along with uncapped players Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan.
Gill, touted as a future leader in Indian cricket, led the Titans briefly this season, guiding them to an eighth-place finish out of ten teams. The team, however, had a stellar debut in 2022, winning the title under Hardik Pandya’s leadership and finishing as runners-up in 2023. Retaining Rashid Khan is expected, given his consistency since joining the Titans. Although his wicket count dropped last season, Rashid’s 27 wickets in 2023 and 19 in 2022 underscore his importance.
Sai Sudharsan had a breakout year, scoring 527 runs in 12 matches, including a century, securing his retention spot. Shahrukh Khan, with a strike rate of 169.33, and IPL veteran Tewatia, known for his powerful hitting, are also likely to be retained.
The IPL’s increased salary cap of Rs 120 crore for the upcoming season, alongside an added match fee of Rs 7.5 lakh per game, allows teams more flexibility. Franchises can retain up to six players, the highest in IPL history, through retention or Right to Match options. The auction is expected to take place abroad in late November, setting the stage for an exciting season with significant roster changes.
