Shakib Al Hasan Set for Afghanistan ODIs, Confirms BCB President
Faruque further explained that if Shakib had returned for the Test, the board would have offered as much security as possible. Since Shakib could not return, the matter became one for law enforcement rather than the board.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed confirmed on Wednesday that Shakib Al Hasan is available for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan in the UAE, starting November 6. The remaining two matches will take place on November 9 and 11. Recently, reports had emerged suggesting Shakib was unsure about his participation, but Faruque clarified the all-rounder’s availability. “The team has not been finalized, which means he is available,” Faruque said at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Faruque also addressed the controversy surrounding Shakib’s absence from his last Test match against South Africa, emphasizing that the BCB had no involvement in the matter. He explained that law enforcement agencies and the government managed the situation due to Shakib’s role as a former Member of Parliament, and the BCB’s role was merely supportive. “As a former player, I believe it would have been fitting for him to retire on home soil, but this was beyond our control,” he stated.
Faruque further explained that if Shakib had returned for the Test, the board would have offered as much security as possible. Since Shakib could not return, the matter became one for law enforcement rather than the board. The BCB president expressed disappointment over the situation but reiterated that the board had minimal influence.
Additionally, Faruque discussed Najmul Hossain’s intent to step down as Bangladesh’s Test captain after the South Africa series. Reports suggest Najmul expressed his desire to relinquish captaincy, which Faruque aims to discuss with him. Faruque noted the importance of understanding players' decisions, rather than making assumptions based on social media or news reports. “If a player feels he cannot continue, we’ll discuss it thoroughly,” Faruque said, emphasizing the need for open communication.
Faruque intends to meet Najmul and other team members in Chattogram to discuss the issue directly. He expressed a commitment to understanding any underlying concerns players might have before making final decisions.
