Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan Back into BCCI Central Contracts

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released its central contract list for the national men's team on Monday, reinstating Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan after being omitted last year. Seven players have been awarded BCCI central contracts for the first time. The contracts are effective from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025.

The list of central contracts remains the same as last time, with players categorized into four groups: A+, A, B, and C. There have been some significant changes within these groups.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah remain in the elite A+ category. The fast bowling contracts that were part of last year's release were not featured in this year's release.

In Category A, there is a major shift with the promotion of Rishabh Pant.
Pant, who was earlier in Category B, has now found himself in the A category along with other big guns such as Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Shami. R Ashwin, who had retired from international cricket a few months ago, has been left out of Category A.

Shreyas Iyer's inclusion back on the central contract list puts him in Category B. The category is otherwise largely similar to the last year, with names like Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal retaining their positions in this group.

The biggest reshuffle this year has occurred in Category C, with multiple players coming in or going out of the contract list. Players such as Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma, KS Bharath, and Avesh Khan, who were included in Category C last year, have now been excluded from the list.
Conversely, some new names have been added to the list such as Nitish Reddy, Abhishek Sharma, Harshit Rana, and some other players. Dhruv Jurel, Sarafraz Khan, Ishan Kishan, and Varun Chakaravarthy have also been added to this category. Akash Deep, who had a year ago a contract for fast bowling, has been upgraded and now possesses a central contract in this category.

A few of the fast bowlers, including Vijaykumar Vyshak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal, and Vidwath Kaverappa, who were given fast bowling contracts earlier, have been left out of this year's list. The key inclusions and elevations to the list reflect a change in the team's priority and acknowledgment of new talent.

The full list of central contracts is as follows:

This restructuring of the central contracts highlights the BCCI's objective of rewarding performances and welcoming new talent to the fold along with accommodating player retirements and changing team dynamics. It is apparent that the board is keeping a close eye on the performance and promise of both established players and newer entrants, as evidenced by the promotion and inclusion of some young players. The system of central contracts remains a necessary instrument for the BCCI to guarantee that its national team continues to be competitive at the game's top tiers.
