Shreyas Iyer's Potential Return to Delhi Capitals: GMR Group's Promises

Shreyas Iyer's future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become a topic of significant interest, especially following his decision to enter the upcoming auction rather than being retained by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR CEO Venky Mysore confirmed that Iyer will be a highly sought-after player, known not only for his skills as a middle-order batter but also for his leadership experience, having previously captained a team to IPL success.

Reports indicate that Iyer's former franchise, Delhi Capitals (DC), is keen to bring him back into the fold. The GMR Group, co-owners of DC, are reportedly promising Iyer the captaincy role if he returns. This potential move comes at a time when DC is undergoing substantial changes, including the release of Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

With an auction purse of ₹73 crore, DC holds the third-largest amount among franchises, positioning them well to make a competitive bid for Iyer. Despite leading KKR to the IPL 2024 title, a mutual agreement between Iyer and KKR could not be reached, prompting his decision to test the waters in the auction.

An IPL franchise official noted, "There won't be too many teams that would want Iyer the T20 batter, but just to ensure DC spends big on a player, they might engage in a bidding war for Iyer."

Additionally, the report hinted that KL Rahul could also be on the radar for teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as a potential captaincy option. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh might be retained by Punjab Kings through the Right to Match (RTM) card, depending on his auction value, while Ishan Kishan is a target for Lucknow Super Giants as they look for a replacement for Rahul.

As the auction approaches, Iyer's return to DC remains one of the most anticipated developments in the IPL landscape.
