MUMBAI, India — Shubman Gill showcased his talent with an unbeaten 70 runs, leading India’s fightback on Day 2 of the third Test against New Zealand. After ending Day 1 at a precarious 86-4, India made significant progress, reaching 195-5 at lunch.
Gill’s impressive innings included a crucial 96-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, who contributed a brisk 60 off 59 balls. This partnership was pivotal in lifting India from a challenging position after a disastrous collapse on the first day, where they slipped from 78-1 to 84-4 in just seven deliveries.
At the lunch break, India trailed New Zealand's first-innings total of 235 runs by 40 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja also remaining unbeaten at the crease. New Zealand had taken the initiative in the series, winning the first two Tests in Bengaluru and Pune by margins of eight wickets and 113 runs, marking a historic first series victory in India.
During his innings, Gill received a let-off when Pant was dropped on 53 by Matt Henry at long off, and Gill himself had a narrow escape, as New Zealand’s fielding faltered in the sweltering heat. Gill notched up his seventh half-century, reaching the milestone in 66 balls. However, New Zealand struck back by dismissing Pant lbw off Ish Sodhi against the run of play, despite Pant's unsuccessful review, marking India’s only wicket loss in the morning session.
As the match progresses, all eyes will be on Gill and Jadeja to help India close the gap on New Zealand's total and put them in a commanding position in the match.
