From Modest Beginnings to Trailblazer
Steph Houghton, former England captain, shared insights into her early struggles and her significant role in shaping women's football. In 2012, despite being one of England's top defenders, she earned just £4,000 annually at Arsenal. Bonuses and side roles brought her income to £9,000.
Houghton’s book, Leading From The Back, details her journey from humble beginnings in South Hetton to captaining England during a transformative era for women’s football. Her efforts helped lay the foundation for today’s improved conditions, where WSL players can earn hundreds of thousands annually.
Negotiating for Better Pay
Houghton joined Arsenal in 2010, prioritizing trophies and professional growth over financial rewards. However, she soon recognized the need to advocate for fairer compensation.
"At 22 or 23, negotiating was intimidating," she recalled. "But I had to stand up for myself."
England Career Highlights and Challenges
Houghton captained England through memorable campaigns, including semi-final runs at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and the 2017 Euros. Despite her achievements, she faced heartbreak when injuries ruled her out of the Euro 2022 and 2023 World Cup squads.
Watching England’s Euro 2022 triumph from home was bittersweet. "It was tough, but I was proud of the team," she said.
Life Beyond Football
Houghton’s personal life has been marked by resilience. In 2018, her husband, Stephen Darby, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease just months after their wedding.
"Being away when he got the diagnosis filled me with guilt," she admitted. The couple faced the condition with strength, leaning on their family and support network.
Houghton retired in 2023 to focus on her family. She and Darby, now navigating his treatment, are also considering starting a family. "We dream big," she said.

Houghton has transitioned into punditry and continues to inspire through her story of perseverance and advocacy. From breaking barriers in women’s football to facing personal adversity with grace, Houghton remains a symbol of strength and progress.
