"The Decision Was Already...": KL Rahul’s Sharp Response to LSG Boss Sanjiv Goenka’s Statement
"The decision was made already," Rahul responded. "I don’t know what the comments are, but they must have come after the retentions were made. I just felt like I wanted to start fresh, explore my options, and play somewhere with a team atmosphere that’s lighter and more balanced."
KL Rahul’s departure from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction has been a major talking point in the cricket world. The former captain’s exit from LSG comes after three seasons with the franchise, during which he had mixed performances and faced scrutiny over his cautious batting approach. Following the announcement of the retention list, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka commented that the team retained players who prioritized the franchise’s success over individual ambitions. This remark led to speculation that Rahul’s personal goals may have influenced his decision to leave.
Goenka’s comment stirred the discussion, stating, "It was a simple mindset to go in for players who have a mindset to win, who put the team before their personal goals and personal aspirations." However, Rahul, speaking to Star Sports, clarified that the decision to part ways had been made in advance and was not a reaction to Goenka’s statement. "The decision was made already," Rahul responded. "I don’t know what the comments are, but they must have come after the retentions were made. I just felt like I wanted to start fresh, explore my options, and play somewhere with a team atmosphere that’s lighter and more balanced."
Rahul captained LSG since its inception in 2022, scoring a remarkable 616 runs in the first season. However, his form declined during an injury-hit 2023 season, leading to questions about his strike rate, which stayed below 135 across his three-year stint with the franchise. His restrained approach, while successful in parts, drew criticism in a league where aggressive batting is often rewarded.
In the interview, Rahul shed light on his preference for a calm, balanced team culture, citing franchises like Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as examples. "I wanted to play in a team atmosphere where it is lighter. Dressing rooms like GT and CSK seem balanced and calm, even when they lose, and that is important to me as a player," Rahul explained. He noted that while LSG tried to create such an environment under coaches like Andy Flower, Gautam Gambhir, and Justin Langer, he ultimately felt the need to seek a different path.
As Rahul prepares to enter the IPL 2025 auction on November 24 and 25, his statements indicate a desire to join a franchise that aligns with his approach to the game, valuing a relaxed yet competitive team culture.
