The injury saga of jasprit Bumrah-A chronicle of setbacks and comebacks
Highlighted through injuries and great comebacks, Jasprit Bumrah's journey is indeed a series of highs and lows on the chronology of resilience and determination.

Every time Jasprit Bumrah steps out onto the field, the cricketing world holds its breath. His action is quite uniquely slingy and he has this knack of bowling match-winning spells without going off anywhere at all, thereby taking an unstoppable place for himself in India's best fast bowler lines. Yet success hasn't come easily to this speed sensation. Cumulative blows apart, injury-wise, through years of cricketing prowess for Bumrah, more has been lost and gained.
From being a cause for slight worry to prepare for his Champions Trophy 2025 when he was still grappling through back spasms, one can do well by digging deeper in to know how all of injury timelinings along with the recoveries coupled with the fantastic never-say-die spirit define Bumrah as one gritty force.
The first significant setback came about in 2018 with thumb fracture.
Bumrah suffered an injury during the T20 International against Ireland, June 2018, while he was trying to grab the ball for a catch; he broke his thumb. In this scenario, he would have missed out on the most-needed England tour completely, and such an injury always comes across as a giant setback to the Indian side. But after a quick rehabilitation process planned ahead, he bounced back into the team, making his comeback inspiring as it well reflected his tenacious will.
The Career-Threatening Stress Fracture in 2019
It was just days after the great Test series against the West Indies in 2019 that scans revealed Bumrah had a lower back stress fracture. Every fast bowler's nightmare. He lost almost three months of cricket as he missed home series against South Africa and Bangladesh. The BCCI medical team monitored him through rehabilitation. Luck for him used this setback to make an epic comeback; setbacks only appeared to make him stronger.
Abdominal Strain During Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2021
He was the most important person in India Down Under's historical Test series victory, but in the third game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2021 things were not good for him since he was excluded from the final Brisbane Test as he suffered from an abdominal strain. Although he missed the final of one of India's greatest series, he was quick to recover and came back for the next home series against England and proved himself once again for his team.
Continuous Back Issues in 2023 – Surgery and Recovery
The most persistent challenger that Bumrah has been battling with his back injuries and 2023 turned out to be one of the toughest years for him. His back injury had kept him out of the home series against Sri Lanka in January, and the pain only worsened, requiring back surgery in March. That, in turn, kept him out of the much-anticipated ICC World Test Championship final against Australia in June. His absence was sorely felt, and true to the reputation he has built, he made a perfect comeback in August, even leading India against Ireland in the series, which marked his commitment and determination toward leadership.
New Setback in 2025-Back spasms
Well, just like people were settling into seeing him back in good form, bad news struck for the second time. Horrendous back spasms had withdrawn him from the field for medical scans to the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, 2025, against Australia. Now that comes at worse times than this when Champions Trophy is up next. In his absence, India would certainly miss him severely since he showed his match-winning prowess during the just concluded World Cup, 2024.
The Resilience of Bumrah-A Hallmark of a Champion
In spite of all these injuries, Bumrah's career has been inspirational, and hence this is why he is among the best pacers in cricket. Every time he came back was a testimonial of the strength of both his mind and body to heal and come better than ever.
Although the Champions Trophy 2025 is not too far off, yet fingers are crossed across the Indian cricket fraternity for Bumrah getting fit in time and leading a bowling attack under his signature lethal deliveries. How history has turned setbacks into somewhat slow but still moving him doesn't stop but wait for this comeback from another of India's finest fast bowlers.
