Trisha Gongadi Makes History in Women's U19 WC with Unbeaten Century
Trisha Gongadi creates history by making a great unbeaten century in the Women's U19 World Cup. She becomes one of the brightest stars in the tournament. It is a momentous occasion for both the player and the team.
Trisha Gongadi of India is the first player in the history of the ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup to have scored a century. She put on an exceptional performance in the Super Six clash against Scotland on Tuesday, not only helping India clinch a dominant 150-run victory but also etching her name in the record books.
It was a great match played at Bayuemas Oval where a phenomenal innings from the 19-year-old right-handed batter was witnessed. Trisha made her century in 53 balls and remained on 110 runs off 59 balls. Her knock was full of 13 boundaries and 4 sixes, and it showed how aggressive she was during that knock. With a blistering strike rate of 186.44, this was definitely a fine display by Trisha, showing off her power-hitting ability with her confidence under pressure.
But what added more significance to Trisha's knock was the solidity she established with her opening partner, G Kamalini. Together they put on a fantastic 147-run stand for the first wicket, during which Kamalini herself played a valuable hand of 51 runs off 42 balls before getting out. After Kamalini's departure, Trisha went on and also scored another unbeaten 61 runs with Sanika Chalka who was not out on 29*. Thanks to this fabulous batting display, India amassed an intimidating total of 208/1 in their 20 overs.
This glorious century put Trisha Gongadi into the history books and propelled her to the top of the tournament run-scorer charts. Currently at 230 runs across five matches, she has outscores all the other batters within the competition thus far. In a similar event preceding this, Trisha was part of India's winning campaign at the first Women's U19 World Cup. Scoring 116 runs across seven matches in that event, she largely added to her success with the bat.
Trisha will certainly shatter several records going ahead with the ongoing tournament also, with such a great form; she has already occupied a place at a distance of just 68 runs to dislodge the place which had earlier been registered by Shweta Sehrawat for 297 runs in the Women's U19 T20 World Cup 2023 held in South Africa. She had achieved the feat in a campaign of seven games and, in case Trisha continues her existing performance, this season may script a new highest record for any single edition.
The journey from this historic result was not one of ease for Trisha. In the first match, on January 19, India locked horns with the West Indies in which she left the field in a mere span of 4 runs. But she soon regained herself in India's second Group A match against Malaysia. She remained unbeaten on 27 runs to lead India to a dominant victory by 32 runs. Her momentum went through to the third match where she added 49 runs to India's total score against Sri Lanka. She scored 40 runs for India in the first Super Six match as India easily clinched victory with eight wickets against Bangladesh.
Thanks to consistency shown by Trisha Gongadi, India's champions from last year are still unbeaten in the tournament and have already confirmed their entry into the semi-finals. Indian team has a huge chance to defend their title with her excellent form added to the strength of the present side, as long as they further extend their rich legacy in women's cricket.
While a perfect blend of power, consistency, and performance under pressure defines Trisha Gongadi, she has not only become one of the standout performers in the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup but has also set up many more milestones in the pipeline. As the tournament heads to its final stages, Trisha's great feats will surely be a key highlight in India's pursuit of another U19 World Cup title.
