Virat Kohli’s Surprise Recognition Leaves Punjab Kings’ Nehal Wadhera Emotional
Nehal Wadhera, Punjab Kings' young star, was moved to tears when Virat Kohli called him by his name prior to their IPL 2025 match. The surprise recognition by the cricket icon gave Wadhera a much-needed confidence boost, resulting in the match-winning 33* against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their very brief encounter, where Kohli gave Wadhera constructive feedback on his game, made Wadhera feel encouraged and validated.

Nehal Wadhera, one of the emerging stars of Punjab Kings, was left in utter shock and amazement when he realized that cricketing great Virat Kohli recalled him by his name. It was a dream come true for the young batter, who couldn't fathom that Kohli, one of his favorite players, knew him personally. This surprise encounter prior to a match turned out to be one of the most memorable moments in Wadhera's career.
It all started when Virat Kohli was talking to Shreyas Iyer prior to the match. In a totally unexpected and nice gesture, Kohli welcomed Wadhera in Punjabi by saying, "Ki haal chaal, Nehal? " that means "How are you doing, Nehal? " It was such a small thing yet it left Wadhera speechless.
He did not expect the cricket legend to recall his name, and it left him with incredible happiness. For the young player, this brief but telling moment was a giant confidence builder. Wadhera, having long wanted to talk to Kohli, used this as the ideal chance to exchange a few words.
"Till last year, I would tell my friends that I wanted to meet Virat bhai once," Wadhera recounted. "That day was a dream come true." That impromptu meeting provided the ice-breaker he sought for so long. It made him feel as if he belonged to Kohli, a person he had cherished and learned from over the years. After the match, Wadhera didn’t waste time and approached Kohli for feedback on his performance. He asked Kohli for his thoughts on his game, having seen him play for the past two years. Kohli’s positive feedback left a lasting impact on him.
The legend praised Wadhera’s shot selection, composure, and match awareness, all of which gave the young player a deeper understanding of how to approach the game better.
It was very nice speaking to him, and I really enjoyed it," Wadhera said with appreciation.
Wadhera's confidence got a further boost after his match-winning score of 33 not out in a rain-truncated match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Post-match, he got a phone call from yet another cricket great, Yuvraj Singh, whose words of advice and guidance were pure gold to him. "His words were golden words to me," Wadhera mentioned about the phone call with immense regard and admiration for Yuvraj Singh. From being a Mumbai Indians floater to being a backbone middle-order batsman for Punjab Kings, Wadhera's transformation has been nothing less than remarkable. He looks back at his first season with Mumbai Indians in 2023, when the encounter against Jofra Archer was the watershed moment. "When I was batting against Archer, that was the real moment where I felt that self-confidence," Wadhera described. "As they say, it's not about being good, it's about knowing that you are good." This year, Wadhera has consistently performed for Punjab Kings, recording a great average of 37.80. He played an important knock of 43 not out against Lucknow Super Giants recently. Wadhera is also well known for playing calmly under pressure, and when the moment called for it, he delivers best. Recalling his game against RCB, he talked about how the coach, Ricky Ponting, instilled confidence in him to remain calm.
But on taking a stroll down to the crease, he realized the pressure of the bowling attack of RCB and recognized it was time to switch the pressure on to the opposing side. With such thinking, he was able to keep himself motivated and guided the Punjab Kings towards success. Wadhera was equally effusive in praise of his skipper, Shreyas Iyer. In his opinion, the leadership of Iyer has instilled a new and constructive change within the Punjab Kings' team. "Shreyas Iyer is certainly an excellent captain.
We all know how he can win games with the bat, but the manner in which he places the field and changes bowlers indicates that he is always thinking about the team, not himself," Wadhera said. Iyer's tactical acumen and leadership have been instrumental in the team's success this season. Making his first appearance for Punjab Kings this season, Wadhera was comfortable from day one. The family-like and welcoming environment established by Iyer and the team has made him confident enough to open up.
"When I joined Punjab Kings, I never felt like a new player coming into the team. It was a family from day one," Wadhera revealed.
He feels that this nurturing environment has enabled him to play to the best of his ability. The good relationship between Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting that was established while they were at Delhi Capitals has also come in handy for Punjab Kings. "The team they built in Delhi is paying dividends here. They already had that chemistry from DC, and now they're applying it to newcomers like me," Wadhera described. Iyer's considerate captaincy and his tendency to prioritize the best interests of the team have been a huge asset to the team. With Punjab Kings gearing up for a crucial game against Kolkata Knight Riders, captained by Iyer's old team, Wadhera's development as a cricketer and his transformation from a young gun to a match-winner for PBKS remain an inspiration for his teammates and fans. With his maturity and consistency, Wadhera is on the path to establishing himself as a player in Indian cricket.
