The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is gearing up for its tenth season, following an exciting Women’s T20 World Cup. The competition promises thrilling action as teams vie for the title. Here’s everything you need to know about this season, including new rules, squads, and players to watch.
When Does the WBBL Take Place?
The tournament kicks off this Sunday with a triple-header at Adelaide Oval. The reigning champions, the Adelaide Strikers, will face the Brisbane Heat in a rematch of last season's final, followed by a game between the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers. The Perth Scorchers will take on the Melbourne Stars later in the day. The regular season concludes on November 24, leading to a week of finals, with the championship match scheduled for December 1.
Tournament Structure
This season features a condensed format with 40 games plus finals, aligning with the Big Bash League (BBL) and accommodating an expanding women’s cricket calendar. Each team will now play only 10 matches, down from 14 last season. The finals format remains unchanged, with the top four teams qualifying. The top-ranked team will host the final, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete in the Knockout on November 27, followed by the Challenger on November 29.
Availability of Players
The start and end of the season will see some key players arriving late or leaving early due to international commitments. Players from India and New Zealand will join the tournament later because of their ongoing ODI series, while those from England and South Africa may miss the finals due to bilateral series.
New Rules for This Season
For the first time, every match will feature a third umpire, and 33 out of 43 matches will utilize the Decision Review System (DRS). An innings timer will also be implemented, mirroring the BBL, with teams having 73 minutes to bowl the 20th over. A penalty will apply if teams fail to meet this deadline, requiring an additional fielder inside the circle.
